Stargate SG-1

Episode 6.08, "The Other Guys"
Written by Damian Kindler
Directed by Martin Wood
Original AirDate: 8.02.02

I'm not usually a huge fan of "geeksploitation." It seems, however, like Stargate does a fairly decent job with it. "Wormhole X-Treme!" was an episode I really loved and this episode continues in the same light-hearted vein, although it carries itself a bit more seriously then "X-Treme" did. This episode finds the SG-1 team babysitting a group of research scientists who are experimenting with a Goa'uld ring transport on another world. The lead scientist, Dr. Felger, is clearly a fanboy of the SG-1 team and is in awe of their presence. He's read their mission reports, and has the hots for Carter. (hey, who doesn't) One of his less than enthused cohorts is none other then John Billingsley, Dr. Phlox from Enterprise. In a nice bit of irony they have him be the "trekkie geek" and he gets to spout some funny Trek stuff during the episode.

Teal'c & Jack are with the scientists and talking with each other about none other then hockey. Jack reminds Teal'c of the sport and that they went to a game last year and Teal'c replies with his normal dead-pan delivery, "I believe the Canucks of Vancouver are superior warriors." Well, I guess he doesn't know hockey too well after all... So they go to join Sam & Jonas at the gate to investigate something and get ambushed by the Goa'uld. The scientists watch as SG-1 is captured and led onto a Goa'uld ship so Felger decides that he and Dr. Phlox will rescue SG-1. The third scientist is sent back to report to Hammond while he and Dr. Phlox activate the rings and transport the Goa'uld ship.

Immediately, Felger begins shooting wildly in a circle even though nobody is in the ring chamber. So begins this inept twosome's attempt at a rescue. Meanwhile SG-1 is in their cell where Jack instructs Jonas on the finer points of how to handle being captured. "It won't be long until some overdressed, over-the-top bad guy floats in and taunts us with an evil fate." Felger & Phlox crawl through the Jeffrey's Tubes (hey, there's a ST theme, ok?) on the Goa'uld ship and get through to SG-1. O'Neill's not too thrilled with their rescue as it turns out SG-1 let themselves be captured so they can be taken to talk to a Tok'ra agent posing as a Goa'uld system lord. Two renegade Jaffa escort Felger & Phlox to a cargo-hold and hide them behind some crates.

Phlox & Felger have a funny conversation which leads to Phlox declaring that they're nothing short of canon fodder red-shirts, but before he can explain the red shirt joke to Felger those renegade Jaffa come in and are promptly shot by apparently loyal Goa'uld Jaffa. All of this while Felger and Phlox remain hidden behind the crates. When the Jaffa leave the cargo-bay, Felger formulates another plan and Phlox wets his pants. So they dress up in the Jaffa outfits and ring down to the planet to try and infiltrate the Goa'uld base.

Meanwhile, SG-1 thinks everything is going according to plan, waiting for Konsu to contact them as O'Neill continues to grow impatient. We find that Felger and Phlox have managed to enter the Goa'uld base and are witnesses to Konsu being exposed as a Tok'ra agent and killed by his first prime. They realize that SG-1's plan is FUBAR so they come up with another plan to rescue them. They head to the base's control room and access the system and make contact with SG-1 in their prison. O'Neill again expresses shock that they've carried out another rescue attempt, but as this time SG-1 is really in trouble I don't think he's going to complain too much.

Felger heads down to the prison cell to bring SG-1 some weapons, while Phlox works at lowering the force shield around SG-1. Felger meets up with SG-1 and they manage to sneak out of the base and approach the stargate on the planet. SG-1 ambushes the Jaffa holding the gate and manage to secure it before O'Neill and Teal'c ring back to the base to help get Phlox out of the control room where he was trapped. They ring back and everyone heads through the gate and goes home, with O'Neill taunting the first prime once more before fleeing.

Back in Stargate Command we're treated to a ceremony in which Phlox and Felger are awarded the Air Force civilian medal of honor. Jack shakes both their hands and tells Felger that even though he disobeyed orders multiple times that he wouldn't have survived if it wasn't for him. Sam gives them both a kiss on the cheek and then draws Felger into a full embrace when Phlox yells at Felger to wake up and they're back in the lab.

You know I didn't even think about this until now but I wonder if the entire episode was a dream that Felger had? Either way it was one of the funniest Stargate's I've ever watched. There are a slew of jokes and banter between the team and then with Jack and the first prime. One of my favorite moments is when Felger and Coombs first enter the cell on the Goa'uld ship and Felger informs O'Neill that Coombs is there too and O'Neill gets this hilarious look on his face and says, "Why look everybody! He's got Coombs with him!" I've watched the episode three times so far and I can't keep a straight face there. It's definitely a nice change of pace from some of the recent let-downs, but it looks like SG may be back on track. This episode may not be all that important to the Stargate Continuity but if I were to sit down and pick five episodes to show people who have never seen the show before I think I'd pick this as one of them to give them a fun viewing.

Episode Rating: 9.5 out of 10
