I can see how this episode may skew opinions between good and bad. There are some rather overlooked plot points in this episode, and the whole thing may have seemed a bit rehashed, but despite those things I still adored this episode. Of course, I think the reason why is because I found Ayiana very cute, but I'm probably getting a bit ahead of myself.
We see a new set of opening credits which shows the stargate moving and has scenes from the show shown with each actor. It's pretty snazzy actually. I think I like them the best out of the syndicated opening and the old Showtime opening. Although it was definitely odd seeing them show Jonas footage, considering he's only been there for five episodes. The show starts off showing some scientist woman up in the Arctic talking to Sam over the 'net. Apparently they've been excavating at the site of the Antarctic stargate. There was a second gate up there, which Daniel believed was older then the Egyptian gate.
It's nice to note that Stargate continues to show a great sense of continuity of what's gone on before. We see the previous information about the Antarctic gate brought up, and also some discussion of the Ancients, the race who built the gates. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Bruce Harwood playing a scientist geek. (you might remember him as John Fitzgerald Byers from The X-Files and The Lone Gunmen) And it's a slight MacGyver reunion as Bruce had a semi-recurring role in a few episodes with Richard Dean Anderson back in the day.
It turns out that a woman was discovered frozen in the ice near the site of the ancient stargate. Apparently she's very well preserved and some samples are taken from the ice and date her to be over 10,000 years old. For some reason SG-1 is dispatched to the site. Now I can understand Carter & Dr. Frasier being sent but I didn't get the rest of the team. I suppose they needed to be in the show though. So the team arrives in the Antarctic and Dr. Frasier discovers that there's still some brain activity from the frozen woman who has been named Ayiana by the scientists. They go through a defrost process which recalls Encino Man , and Ayiana is resuscitated and looks very Milla-like from The Fifth Element.
Ayiana seems to have a capacity for healing herself and after looking at her EKG, Dr. Frasier points out that those readings look similar to those of telepathic/telekinetic activity. Jonas takes a liking to Ayiana and tries to establish a dialogue with her. This turns out to be fairly easy, as it seems like Ayiana uses her telepathic ability to understand what he begins to say, although she never responds other then an initial "Amazing."
The scientists at the base begin to drop like flies, presumably from some virus that was frozen with Ayiana. I guess Stargate is pointing out that those scientists who found a frozen wooly mammoth should be very careful. So who says it's not educational? Ayiana manages to heal the scientists but it takes a visible effort on her part and exhausts her. Jonas continues to spend time with her and find out more about her, but she remains a mystery to everyone. Then SG-1 begins to exhibit symptoms of the virus and things are looking fairly bleak.
Ayiana manages to heal Jonas and Sam (Teal'c is immune from the virus so doesn't need to be healed) but she collapses before managing to heal Jack. A decon team is sent to the base and evacuates SG-1 and the scientists. SG-1 returns to Cheyenne Mountain with a dying Jack, and a dying Ayiana. The lovely girl doesn't make it through the episode as she had exhausted her own body's immune system by healing too many people and she dies as Jonas looks on helplessly.
The episode ends on a real shocker as the Tok'ra appear with an offer to heal Jack, but it will require implanting him with a symbiont. Now we all know that Jack would be totally opposed to something like this, as he's mentioned his feelings on the subject on more than one occasion. The Tok'ra rep makes it clear that they're very interested in obtaining information on the previous Tok'ra host had through the symbiont, and that if a suitable host isn't found then the symbiont would kill itself rather then stick with Jack if he doesn't want it.
Sam manages to convince Jack to accept the Tok'ra offer and receive the symbiont. The episode ends with him being taken through the stargate to receive the snake. I have no idea how this will play out, the next episode could just gloss over this and pick up later or maybe it'll still have a Tok'Ra Jack. I'm definitely looking forward to the first five minutes of the next episode to see what's up though.
The big downer of this episode was Ayiana dying. I would have liked to see her survive, as it could have happened that she got the symbiont and then when it healed her she would have been able to use her abilities to heal Jack, but alas. I suppose it wasn't meant to be. There were also rumors that this episode was going to setup the future spin-off show called Stargate: Atlantis but I didn't see any big revelations so maybe that was pushed back to a future episode. All in all it's been my favorite of the new season I believe.
Episode Rating: 8.5 out of 10
