Stargate SG-1

Episode 6.01, "Redemption - Part I"
Original Air-Date: 6.7.02
Directed by Martin Wood
Written by Robert C. Cooper

I realize some fans of Stargate may have just seen season four in syndication and are thinking of watching it now that's going to air on the Sci-Fi channel. So let me do a quickie season five recap -- be warned there will be some spoilers of it in there but Sci-Fi channel is going to be re-running all of Stargate eps later in the year and it will still be running in syndication as well.

Season five began with SG-1 trapped 125 light years from Earth and thinking Teal'c was dead. They manage to get him back and also kill Apophis in the process when he crashes into a planet. The SGC has some run-ins with the NID during the year and a new recurring character played by John DeLancie (Frank Simmons) appears in a few as an NID head with his own agenda. The Goa'uld situation becomes heated as the system lords jockey for position with the death of Apophis. It turns out there's a powerful and mysterious Goa'uld named Anubis who has been attacking all the system lords. Dr. Daniel Jackson is sent undercover to a meeting of the system lords with a vial of poison that will kill all Goa'uld parasites. He doesn't assassinate the system lords because his former college sweetie Sarah (now a Goa'uld named Osiris) shows up in place of Anubis as his messenger. Anubis forms an alliance with the system lords since he has improved technology they're interested in.

SG-1 suffers a sad loss when Dr. Daniel Jackson becomes exposed to a highly radioactive form of naquadah called naquadriah. He is visited by Oma Desala the spirit who watched the Hasesis child and he elevates to another plane of existence. SG-1 now three members is dispatched to rescue a trapped Asgard in the finale after Anubis' powerful weapons show their worth by making mincemeat out of Thor's Asgard battleship. They succeed and rescue Thor in the process and now we're at season six, stated to be the final season of Stargate and now airing on the Sci-Fi channel at 9PM Friday nights, starting June 7th.

Whew! So now that the quickie season five recap is out of the way let's get started with the season premiere of Stargate. First off let me thank the Sci-Fi channel for airing this wonderful show in widescreen! It looks unbelievably great in this format, and I can't believe I used to hate widescreen. I can't wait to see how Farscape looks in it as well. The biggest change you notice is that Jonas Quinn is back. Quinn was in the episode when Daniel Jackson became exposed to the radiation and is now on Earth because he stole Naquadriah from his own world's government to provide to the Stargate Command. He's not yet a part of SG-1 but clearly wants to join the team.

It doesn't look like things have been going very smoothly for SG-1 in trying to find a replacement for Daniel. In the Murphy Brown secretary, or Gilmore Girls Emily & Richard's maid vein the SG-1 has run through eight or nine possible replacements for Daniel and none have fit. This makes me think we've spanned at least three months since the season finale, if not more. It turns out that Area 51 has been working on a new advanced glider. If you'll remember way back in season four Jack & Teal'c tried to fly one of the US-built gliders and ended up nearly dying stranded in space. Hopefully the X-302 will be better crafted.

I also have to give some credit to the Stargate producers since Corin Nemec isn't nearly as annoying as I thought he'd be. He's no Daniel, but we're past that road so I'll try to just deal with how he is as Jonas Quinn and he seems to be an interesting character. He clearly wants to be a part of SG-1, although none of the other members of the team seem to want think of him as a good replacement so they don't want to try him out. He even goes as far to boxing Teal'c and asking that Teal'c speak to O'Neill if he (Jonas) can knock Teal'c down. Good luck there kid.

The Sci-Fi channel definitely isn't squelching on the budget as there are some of the most beautiful effects I've seen on the series shown. From the X-302, to some space shots, and other things. I'm very excited about this season and glad it's beginning very shortly. The season premiere has a unique twist in that it's a cliffhanger! Imagine that? Since I only received the first tape I'm now waiting just like you folks will be, but at least you guys will just wait one week. If you haven't watched Stargate regularly before but are thinking of doing so now because it's on the Sci-Fi channel before Farscape I definitely recommend doing so. It's one of the best shows on TV for weaving this highly complex continuity through its episodes and has some very engaging characters and dialogue. You can check back through some of mine and Gobi's past Stargate reviews or just contact me and I'll point you to some good Stargate sites for some more information. Now if I could just convince Sci-Fi channel to force them to add Lt. Hailey as a regular cast member and I'd be a happy camper.
