Stargate SG-1

Episode 5.14, "48 hours"
Original Air-Date: 3/15/02
Director: Peter F. Woeste
Writer: Robert C. Cooper

At first, I thought this episode was going to be another weak Teal'c episode where we're reminded that he's still a member of the cast despite his conspicuous lack of lines in many episodes. Instead, Teal'c was actually relegated to a plot device. Though it does lead to a pretty cool episode, I wish we could've had Teal'c be involved as more than a simple dramatic hook.

This week pushes forward some of the plot threads established earlier this season with the big one being that terminally ill billionaire turned Goa'uld. While escaping an attack from Tannith, SG-1 runs into the stargate with Teal'c trailing behind to have his final revenge on that little wanker. Just as Teal'c leaps through the event horizon, Tannith's ship collides with the stargate, closing the wormhole and leaving his energy signature swirling about in the earthside stargate's memory doohickeys.

Now this would be all well and good if Carter were given enough time to figure out a way to rescue the big guy, but that wouldn't be very exciting.

"Thank you for rescuing me, Major Carter."

"Sure, it wasn't a problem. There was adequate time, sufficient resources, no complications and no Quentin Tarantino impersonators to get in the way."

"Indeed."

Indeed.

But nope, we've got to have all those things, even the Tarantino guy. See, the problem Carter's facing is that the gate's memory will clear Teal'c's energy signature if a wormhole opens up. Jackson is sent off to negotiate with the Russians to allow off-world SG units to return home through their gate. Unfortunately, the Russians are taking the opportunity to be hardasses now that they've got the SGC by the balls.

Meanwhile, back home, that Rat Bastard Maybourne contacts O'Neill with information that could help Teal'c. The Goa'uld billionaire guy that Simmons secretly rescued in "Desperate Measures" is being held in a safehouse. They'll need this Goa'uld's knowledge to save Teal'c. Simmons himself is busy offering Hammond this very same information in exchange for a Goa'uld hand device which he plans on giving to that Goa'uld. Phew... That was a mouthful.

There's also a subplot with an area 51 scientist who is sent to help Carter with the rescue. He's the Tarantino-clone I mentioned previously. The actor plays a fast-talking asshole better than the man himself did on Alias.

Despite all the Guy Ritchie-esque interconnecting subplots spinning around this episode like a Stargate on crack, this week's little adventure was really about the main characters and their respective rivals. Carter has Quentin Tarantino. O'Neill has Maybourne. Teal'c has Tannith. Hammond has Simmons. Jackson... uh... I guess he has the Russians.

No wait, Daniel Jackson's rival is any pig-headed politico-military leader whose stubbornness blinds them to the true concerns at hand. Ha! All those art critiques I wrote in freshman year really did pay off.

In the end, most of the rivalries are resolved with Simmons being arrested, Tannith being killed and the Russians being given Quentin Tarantino. Heh. Of course, Teal'c is rescued. Carter manages to create an event horizon without a wormhole that ends up looking kind of cool. Russians lose their DHD in the process though. Man, they're just having the worst luck this week.

Everyone gets 3000 experience points this week and Jackson earns himself a snappy new pair of +2 Glasses of Shrewd Negotiation. Use them well, young one.

Episode Rating: 8 out of 10

- Daniel Solis is a fast-talking, pig-headed, polito-military Tarantino-clone.
