Roswell
It has always been suspected that Liz, after being healed by Max that one fateful day, was no longer the same person she was two years ago. It has also been hinted that she might have acquired an alien power due to the contact, and in tonight's episode, we may finally find out for ourselves the answer to that question.
"Ch-Ch-Changes"
Season 3, Episode 12
Written by Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts
Directed by Paul Shapiro
It's no secret that Jim Valenti now performs in a band after he lost his job as Roswell's sheriff. Much to Kyle's dismay, it seems that Maria has decided to join the Kit-Shickers as well. After her debut with the group, an executive from a record label immediately approaches Maria expressing interest in signing her. Meanwhile, Liz is feeling pretty rotten physically. She attributes it to the flu that's going around, but strange things are happening to her like never before. For example, the next day during biology class, she can't see her face when looking in a mirror. The image is blurry and all the facial features disappear. A few seconds later her reflection pops back to normal. Not sure why she's hallucinating and tired all the time, Liz goes to the doctor for a quick check up, but nothing out of the ordinary turns up. Having no one else to turn to, she visits Kyle at the mechanic shop. Since Max also brought him back to life, she thinks that he might understand what she's going through. While she's there, Liz emits some kind of an electrical charge causing a car radio to play and she change stations with a simple wave of her hand. Now Kyle is just as scared as she is, but Liz makes him promise not to tell Max about it.
Excited about her demo deal, Maria shows up at Michael's apartment to tell him all about it. At first he gives her the cold shoulder, not really showing any concern for it, but eventually Michael warms up to the idea and gives her his support. Later on, Maria stops by Liz's place to share the good news. Still concerned about her own situation, Liz decides not to tell her friend about it for fear of spoiling Maria's moment. Unfortunately, Liz can't hide the secret from Max. After helping Liz prep for her Harvard interview after school, she suddenly faints, and when she tries to pick up her books, Max witnesses Liz setting them on fire. Upset by the discovery, Max drags Michael out to the desert to search for the alien book they buried a few episodes ago when his dad was checking up on him. He's determined to find something that will be able to heal Liz.
Meanwhile, Liz's condition continues to deteriorate. During her meeting with the Harvard admissions personnel, there are times where she can't hear the other person speaking. She also hallucinates. Unable to continue she apologizes and rushes out of the room. Max later finds her back at her house with Kyle, her situation having gotten even worse. Her hands are covered with these green electrical charges. Not knowing what else to do, Max decides to use the healing stones to amplify his power, which hopefully will allow him to wipe out whatever is inside of her. The experiment is unsuccessful, and afterwards Liz lashes out at Max for trying to hurt her. She says that whenever he speaks about his son, she's always reminded of him being unfaithful to them. When Max attempts to caress Liz's face, the green charges came back; it seems that close contact with Max triggers the symptom.
Meanwhile, Michael's renewed interest in Maria's life is causing her some grief, but she bluntly tells him that they are no longer linked, so he shouldn't bother to be so over-protective of her. The meeting with the producer proves to be a disaster for Maria. Instead of keeping her song intact, it was remixed to sound like something else completely different. Not willing to sell out and compromise her music, she walks out on the possible record deal. She goes back to Michael for sympathy, but he pushes her away because he doesn't want to be the one she blames for ruining her chance. He also reveals that Liz might be dying. Maria immediately goes to the Parker's after hearing the news, and Liz explains she didn't want Maria to worry, encouraging her to not give up on the opportunity to fulfill her dream. In the last few minutes of the show, Liz finally chooses to go to boarding school to take back control of her life.
This was a decent episode overall - the performances were consistently good, plus we got to see more of Maria and Kyle, something I've been asking for all season. Although the relationship between Liz and Max is still unresolved at the moment, it does reach a point that doesn't leave the audiences hanging. I did, however, feel that Liz's decision in the end was a bit extreme. It's surprising how she can just drop everything in Roswell and start fresh somewhere else, even though that's probably what she needs the most right now. I'm very curious to see how this change will impact the lives of the Roswell teens, and I have complete trust in Katims and crew to give us the best that they can offer.
