Roswell
As is typically the case, the new year brings with it the usual whispers of Roswell's demise. Rumors have spreading on the web, because unfortunately, the show did have its fair share of ups and downs during the past few months. With the second half of the season's episodes coming up, we can only hope that the series will be consistent enough to bring in good ratings for consideration of a fourth season.
"I Married an Alien"
Season 3, Episode 11
Written by Ronald D. Moore
Directed by Patrick Norris
Ever imagined the Roswell cast in one of those old sitcoms that you see on Nickelodeon? Well, this is your chance. While helping Isabel paint her new apartment, we found out that Michael has been watching television non-stop ever since he broke up with Maria. Just at that moment Bewitched happened to be on, and Isabel began to wonder how different her life would be if she were in Samantha's place. With a brief but cool intro of the fictitious show called I Married an Alien starring Isabel, we catch a glimpse of an alternate reality where Jesse knows the truth about his wife's alien identity and is OK with it. So for the rest of the hour, we get scenes from the made-up sitcoms interspersed with the episode.
Later in the day, Isabel got a surprise visit from Jesse's best friend in college, Eric, a reporter who missed the couple's wedding and decided to drop in for a few days. The two buddies spend most of the night catching up with each other. Apparently, Jesse has been keeping a few secrets from Isabel, and he admits to Eric that Isabel has done the same. He goes on to explain that weird things that have been happening with no explanation, such as Max healing his broken nose with a steak and Isabel fixing an icemaker in mere seconds after he spent a long time with it. Eric joked that since it was Roswell after all, maybe Isabel and her brother are really aliens. Jesse laughed it off as non-sense, but Isabel was less than amused when she heard about it afterwards.
The next morning, Eric announced that he wanted to do a story on Ramirez, and although Isabel had her doubts about it she reluctantly agreed to go along. Meanwhile, Michael got into an argument with Max about the excessive amount of time he spends in front of the television, and in the process Michael accidentally destroys the TV with his power. Things become a whole lot more interesting for Eric when he meets Michael on the golf course. While taking a quick smoke in the woods he witnessed Michael bending trees with a wave of his hand to help him with the game. Telling Jesse and Isabel about what he saw, Eric wants to interview Michael as part of the article he's writing, but to his dismay, his laptop breaks after Michael touches it, making him even more suspicious.
Pressured by Isabel, Jesse later confronts his friend to drop the story. Eric promised to stop with the scoop, but as soon as Jesse steps out of the office, he takes the liberty of going through Michael's files. He then finds a social worker that handled Michael's case before, and was able to obtain a few juicy gossips from the lady. All does not bode well for Max, Isabel and Michael, and for once in their life, they have no idea what to do. Luckily, Jesse saves the day when he went looking for Michael's records to check out who Eric's source was. Discovering that Eric stole the paperwork from his office, Jesse threatens him with a lawsuit if he prints the article, and broke off the friendship with him. Isabel was relieved, although she found her husband's reaction a bit too extreme, and seeing how Jesse reacted after being lied to, she wonders if he can ever forgive her when she finally tells him the truth about herself.
I enjoyed tonight's show quite a bit actually. The sets, the accents and the dialogue completely captured the nostalgic feeling of watching an old sitcom rerun. Very refreshing and a good change of pace from the previous episodes. This was a good example of taking a risk to try something different and doing it well. I do, however, have a couple of complaints though. The issue with Isabel not revealing her secret to Jesse is still being tossed around, and I wish she would just settle on a decision and be done with it. Jesse continues to be a dull character, I've completely given up hope of ever liking him. Lastly, Maria and Kyle are still relegated to cameos. They have so much potential to help make the series better, give them a chance!
