Roswell

Roswell continues to see its characters develop, and this episode is no exception. As the spotlight is focused on the three female leads, we find out more about how each one matures in their relationships with those that they love.

"Significant Others"
Season 3, Episode 3
Written by David Simkins
Directed by Patrick Norris

As Isabel continues her secret courtship with Jesse, she feels frustrated because of the pact she made with Michael and Max -- that they will never tell anyone else about their true natures. Alone one night she decided to take a peek into Jesse's dream. With the Eiffel Tower in the background, she saw him proposing and her answering yes. Toying with the thought of marriage, Isabel gets a visit from Alex (a figment of her mind that sort of represents her ties to the past). She goes on to confess to him (or is it to herself?) that she sees Jesse as someone who she can spend the rest of her life with.

At the Crash Town, tensions flare as Liz is still at odds with her father. On the other hand Maria is unsuccessfully trying to remind Michael of their date on Saturday, when they were interrupted by rest of the guys from the graveyard shift. Isabel showed up a minute later to ask Maria for advice, under the guise of a survey. She was wondering how long one should date before considering marriage. While Alex is trying to convince Isabel to forget what she witnessed in the dream, she notices Jesse going into a jewelry shop with a ring in his hand. Spooked by she saw, Isabel decides to end the relationship with Jesse when they meet that night at the movie theater (we find out that Jesse came to Roswell to visit his mother after graduating from Harvard Law School, and Isabel is still considering going to college.) Returning from her walk with Max, Liz discovers her parents arguing downstairs. So why is her father so over protective all of a sudden?

Devastated by the break-up, Isabel went to see Kyle the next day. He encourages Isabel to tell Jesse the truth and suggests she talk to Max and Michael about it. Meanwhile, Maria is still having trouble with the absent-minded Michael who missed their lunch date. Wanting more quality time together, she made him promise her a perfect night.

Discovering that Jesse is moving back to New York, Isabel shows up at the Ramirez home hoping to salvage the situation. They both agree to meet for dinner the next day and to lay their cards on the table. Determined to be honest with Jesse, Isabel confronts Michael and Max about wanting to let him in on the secret. Unfortunately, both of them tell her that this isn't a good idea.

Saturday night Maria and Michael find themselves at the bowling alley, and it quickly becomes apparent that Michael double-booked that evening. In addition to their date, Michael and the guys from work are in a bowling league. It didn't take long for Maria to figure out what really was going on, but to Michael's surprise, she confesses to him that it was wrong for her to want him all to herself, and that she is really happy to see him having a good time with his friends. As for Liz, she finally finds out the truth about her father. It seems that when he was about her age, he was involved in a car accident that resulted in his girlfriend's death, and now he's afraid of losing her.

So Isabel is having a little more trouble on her night out. First she found a ring in Jesse's jacket, and then she jumped the gun thinking that he was going to propose to her, only to discover that was his mother's ring he was asked to pawn. Sensing an opportunity, however, Jesse decides to ask Isabel to marry him, but she says no. At the urging of Alex, Isabel finally decides to let go of the past and move on with her future. She runs after Jesse and tells him that she's changed her mind. As we see the image of Alex fade out, we can't help but wonder what's ahead for these two, especially since Jesse still doesn't know Isabel's alien identity, and how much longer can she hide it from him.

This was a very difficult episode to review. Isabel never can seem to make up her mind, and her mood swings were unpredictable and hard to follow. I felt that the script was poorly written, and it was probably a mistake to give so much focus on the whole Isabel and Jesse relationship. Even though she finally forgave herself at the end, nothing seems really resolved between the two of them. On the other hand we got a few good scenes with Maria and Michael, who are much more comfortable around one another now, and the banter is very endearing at times. Liz and her father ended the episode on a more positive note, but whether he'll accept Max back into their life again, only time will tell. At this moment I'm craving a little more action in the future, but I don't think we'll have to wait too long from the look of next week's preview.

Episode Rating: 6 out of 10
