"The Andorian Incident" supposedly gives us our first glimpse of those pesky Vulcan neighbors since the original series. I can't pretend to know for sure if that's true or not, but I've heard some rumblings to the contrary. Anyway...
I guess I'll just start by saying I found this episode a little dull for the first 45 minutes or so, but it actually had one heck of a payoff. The ending for me really rescued this one from the mediocrity that was becoming all-too-regular for Enterprise.
In short: Archer & Co. are passing by an ancient Vulcan monastery. Not necessarily interesting per se, but hey -- it's new to humans, so it warrants a look-see. Now, 99% of the time this place is dullsville, but it just so happens that the aforementioned pesky Andorians have come by at the exact same time to hang out. See, the Vulcan and Andorians are arch-enemies, and while there's a treaty in place, the blue-skins with antennae think the Vulcans have broken it by maintaining a high-tech surveillance station beneath the monastery.
Not a bad set-up. It just went by pretty slowly. Archer, Trip and T'Pol are taken hostage almost right away, and spend the majority of the episode cooped up. Like I said, the episode really redeemed itself with the final confrontation and revelation --
SPOILERS
Turns out you really just can't trust the Vulcans. First they stifle humanity's progress for nearly a century, and then they pull this. The Andorians paranoia was well-founded. They were right all along. The best scene was when Archer ordered T'Pol to record the finding and give it to the Andorians. T'Pol had defended her allegiance to Archer earlier in the episode by reminding him that she'd never disobeyed his orders, and while she was probably severely tempted here -- again, she obeyed. So I found that very cool. Despite her Vulcan heritage, she really is trustworthy. Hopefully, her loyalty won't be questioned again, because I think she's proven herself, and it will become a tired theme if they don't give it a rest.
END SPOILERS
So, a slight little episode that's pretty decent. Certainly better than what Berman & Braga served up the past two weeks. Here's hoping that they get back to something resembling a story arc soon.
Episode Rating: 6 out of 10.
