The Great Link managed to talk to with Brannon Braga about writing for Enterprise as opposed to Voyager. "Are you kidding? You'd better believe it. I needed something new, something fresh. As a writer, I don't think that I could have written one more line of dialogue for Voyager. I really had just about had it with the 24th Century. One thing I'm finding here after having written ['Broken Bow''] plus 4 other episodes is that I do feel that I'm writing a different television show. Actually, Rick Berman and I were heavily influenced by [successful dramas like 'The West Wing' and 'The Sopranos'] We watch television too. Week after week we would watch shows like The Sopranos and we'd say 'Wouldn't it be great if we could just write people without having to worry about that somewhat stylised, neutral way of talking?' We were really pining to write characters like that. This concept allows us to really start writing more naturalistic characters."

Captain ArcherThe first piece of footage from the series is now available. UPN aired a new promo spot for the show with actual footage from the series. It lists the date for the first episode as September 26. You can see the promo here at TrekEnterprise. They also have screen captures from the promo if you don't want to download the whole thing.

Enterprise NX-01We've got some more details on the look of the show for you. Dark Horizons came up with this new shot of the Enterprise NX-01 which gives a better idea of it's overall shape. I like the design but it's hard to believe that the ship from TOS would have evolved from this design. The Federation must have lost a lot of designers in battle...

Scott BakulaElsewhere, at Trek Today they got the transcript and several screen captures from a behind the scenes report aired by the UPN affiliate in LA. It features a talk with Scott Bakula and a look at an episode being shot, which means we can finally see the uniforms and the bridge of the ship. The uniforms seem most similar to the most recent of Federation uniforms but a bit more military in style and far less form fitting. Again, it seems a derivative of the most modern Federation styles rather than a precursor to all of it. Maybe it's just me.

EnterpriseThe latest issue of TV Guide contains the very first official image of the starship Enterprise. It bears a striking resemblance to the Akira class ships seen in Star Trek: First Contact. It's a good looking ship but I was expecting something that looked less sophisticated than the Enterprise on Star Trek: TOS.

Jolene BlalockA few interesting items for you today. First off, if you'd like to get a very good look at Jolene Blalock, who plays the Vulcan T'Pau, you should head over to Maxim Online which has a lovely photo spread of the actress. Just make sure your mother or significant other isn't around first...

Secondly, Garth at Dark Horizons had a few comments on the Sulliban as a followup to his script review. It concerns their ability restructure their skeletons as needed.

"Yes the Suliban have this 'skeletal restructuring' ability, what it looks like is hard to figure out (even with the text) but the abilities it gives them is cool. Unlike Odo's shapeshifting ability (which was only shown twice in the pilot), here its shown about half a dozen times and allows them to flatten themselves out and squeeze through door and wall cracks only a few inches wide. It also gives them the ability to turn arms, legs, wrists, etc. 360 degrees and so are near impossible to restrain with conventional means like handcuffs."

Finally today, the word from AICN is that James Cromwell will have a cameo appearance on the pilot episode to reprise his character Dr. Zephram Cochrane from the movie Star Trek: First Contact.

Garth over at Dark Horizons reviewed the script to the pilot episode. You can find it here.

Dark Horizons ran this report on the series:

"Was at the recent UPN meeting where I saw pictures of Bakula and crew on the set... there was also a short video of Bakula talking about what it will be like as captain with the crew sitting in their places. The uniforms are purple and look like a mix of a military uniform and Starfleet's uniforms. They are not neraly as form fitting. They have yellow stripes around the shoulders, not sure if those have anything to do with rank. There is also a badge of some sort on each forearm, it may be a NASA symbol, couldn't tell. On the show people don't quite trust the idea of there being a Starfleet and some people don't trust transporter technology. They are still freaked out when they see an alien, etc. It's very early on, I would say just a few years after Cochran first meets a Vulcan (around 2110). It sounds good to me, I will definitely watch the first few at least."

It's official. Paramount has announced that the new Star Trek series will be titled Enterprise and should premiere this fall on UPN. While they were at it they announced the cast of characters and some details on the storyline.

The series will take place in the 22nd century aboard the starship Enterprise. Vulcans and humans have just started the formation of the Federation. Starships are in their infancy. Commanding the Enterprise is Captain Archer, a "physical and intensely curious captain with a bold personality. Although he has a strong sense of duty, he is a bit of a renegade and is not afraid to question orders or even disobey them if he feels in his guts that he is right." He will be played by Scott Bakula, who most of you probably remember from the series Quantum Leap. The rest of the cast includes actors Jolen Blalock, Connor Trinneer, Anthony Montgomery, Linda Park, John Billingsley and Dominic Keating.

With Paramount expected to announce the new Star Trek series any day now, it's time to cut through the crap and see just what this series is all about. The good folks over at Trek Today have landed a monster of a scoop by reviewing the script for the pilot episode of the new series. Here are a few tidbits.

Looking at the pilot script, character development and relationships seem to be at the forefront of Enterprise. One of the things I liked most about the script is the sense of humor that is reminiscent of TOS. Friends and adversaries spar with each other - remember the Spock-Bones relationship? The series certainly has a lot more character drama than what we've seen on Trek in recent years.

I am convinced that Enterprise could have a crack at being the best Star Trek series to date. It'll be like a second Renaissance for humanity - the chance to go out and really seek out strange new life and civilisations, something that the more recent series have lacked. These characters will be facing a real New Frontier. Also, the ship will be in the Solar System quite a bit due to speed limitations, so we'll get a first hand glimpse at how this technological revolution affects humanity, and our reactions on meeting all these new races.

Now that we've gotten you excited go read the whole thing here. Be forewarned that it contains numerous spoilers so don't read it if you like surprises.
