The Chronicle

Picking right up where the pilot episode left off, "What Gobbles Beneath" continues the trend of good.

1.2 -- "What Gobbles Beneath"
Directed by Adam Davidson
Written by Silvio Horta

The Chronicle: What Gobbles BeneathTucker's been given a real loser of a story to work on. Something to do with potato chips. Can't remember the specifics, but pointless in any case. He's much more intrigued by the disappearance of Rupert Blackstone, who vanished right in the middle of a NYC park. While potential kidnappings aren't the usual fare for the World Chronicle, Tucker defies the boss and keeps snooping. And it's a good thing, too.

Apparently, a centuries-old monster has been living under Manhattan. Dubbed "oosbee unaygil gad skil", or little ugly dirt monster by native americans, this thing turns out to be nothing but a big-ass tumor. A tumor with a serious attitude problem.

The tumor, not surprisingly, feeds off of radiation (and people) and is drawn to a new cell phone, which emits massive amounts of radiation. Any bastard unlucky enough to have one of these Yamaguchi 9000 phones gets swallowed alive. Lucky for New York, Pig Boy has a solution -- chemo the tumor to death. Fortunately, the plan works, but not before the monster eats Yamaguchi CEO Frank Bailey. "A little too late for Mr. Bailey," notes Wes, "but what can you do?"

Once again, I found this show to be funny and clever in the same vein as MIB or X-Files. While not quite as good as the pilot, it was still a pleasant diversion. I wouldn't say "I'm hooked," but I'll keep watching for now. My only complaint is that Tucker is still looking for a way to escape the Chronicle, and get a real job, but by the end, I think this is resolved.

If you still haven't seen this, give it a shot. Though it does have the dreaded saturday night time slot, I'm sure most of you still have your VCRs.
