Angel
Episode 3.20, "A New World"
Written by Jeffery Bell
Directed by Tim Minear
We pick up right where we left off last episode. Young Indiana Connor (tm cheungcheung) has teleported into the hotel. Backhands a big ugly demon and says "Hi Dad." He proceeds to shoot two stakes at Angel from a stake gun in slow motion Matrix bullet time. A lame retread. Worst. Opening. Ever.
After the lame fight scene Connor takes the whole tourist trap tour of L.A. on a city bus. Except he wants a lot of head room and leaps to the top of a moving bus to get him moving. Meanwhile, the big portal in the middle of the hotel is still zapping. Could more Faculty bugs be far behind?
Before we get the answer to that though we go to my man Wesley. He still looks all haggard and lonely, but wait! There's a knock on the door, it's a visitor, all is forgiven, we love you Wesley! Oh... it's Lilah. Lilah just walks right in and offers Wesley a job at Wolfram & Hart. Being the good boy that he is he tells her to go to hell, but she gives him a get well gift anyway. A copy of Dante's Inferno, in which we learn that "The worst spot in Hell is reserved for those who betray." Short, sweet, and still the coolest moment of "A New World."
Connor is still living it up in the big city and hops off the bus into the middle of a drug deal. All of L.A.'s rich cornucopia of life on his first day! The junkie is a girl named Sunny who is officially The. Hottest. Crack Whore. Ever. I am Comic Book Guy, hear me roar! When he sees the drug dealer trying to hurt her Connor springs into action. Literally. He jumps down an overpass and beats the crap out of all the drug dealer's people and saves the girl. He even cuts off the drug dealer's ear to add to his "things I killed" belt.
After a little bantering between the Hottest Crack Whore Ever and Young Indiana Connor in the squatter's paradise we jump back to the portal watching as it's still going on at the Hotel. Groo explains "As you know, an engorged burbeast will couple with anything that moves. I had to stand perfectly still for eleven days." Say what you will about Groo, but he can bring the snark. He's also extremely subtle in his ways of letting Cordy know just how much all her Angel-talk makes him want to tell her to go kamshuck herself.
A second scene with Wesley (wow, what an honor!) is over before it starts so we can get back to the forgone conclusion that the Hottest Crack Whore Ever has overdosed. Connor is angry, then Angel shows up. Angel gets all fathery and don't do drugs while Connor stands back looking ready to kill the demon. It's a really cool scene. Then it gets even cooler as the drug dealer comes back looking for his ear. There's a shootout, police chases, and Angel takes buck shot to his back as he and Connor escape. It was freakin' great.
After the escape, Connor runs off to be alone and Angel tells him he's not alone. Connor replies I know as we see him meeting a really old Holtz. I mean way old. Connor's about 17 (technically 22 but who's counting), but Holtz went from like 45-50 to 90. Man, Quor-toth is hell.
