Do you have any inside information on Survivor 2? If so share it with us! Use our scoop form or email us at news@tnmc.org. Friday November 3 02:05 PM EDT by Eugenie Navarre for theage.com.au Aborigines believe the second series of the hit American television series Survivor is being shot in an area of north Queensland where a massacre of indigenous people occurred more than a century ago. Security around the shoot is exceptionally tight but it is known contestants are in the Herbert River Gorge area where hundreds of Aborigines were apparently killed by the Europeans. The horrific slaughter of men, women and children is undocumented in historic records. However, local Aborigines have passed down tales of the brutality and murder through tribal stories.Eerie noises make the district a taboo area for Aborigines and locals who believe they are made by the spirits of the departed. Betty Gosam of Tully has a clear recall of stories handed down of the frightening human screams which keep Aborigines away from the Herbert Gorge murder sites. “Old Aboriginal people wouldn't go within cooee of the Herbert Gorge area,” she said today. “They reckon the boss of Kirrama Station was cruel and used to line the Aborigines up along the gorge and shoot them down.” Ms Gosam said old-timers and cattlemen always stayed clear of the area. “The cattlemen said they heard cries and screaming at night,” she said. Romayne Weare, author of the historical novel Malanbarra and a princess of the rare royal Kirrama tribe which inhabited the Survivor series area, said old people spoke of police troopers rounding up children and adults from the Tully and Herbert Gorge areas. “A few years ago a skeleton of a baby was found at the entrance to a cave near the Kirrama scrub,” she said. “Anthropologists estimate it was 90 to 100 years old. The old people say it would be the time of massacres.” Ms Weare said to her knowledge the massacres of a number of Aboriginal tribes had never been documented. |
