MOVIE REVIEWS
Maybe when viewed back to back with the eventual Kill Bill, Vol. 2, this movie will make good sense. Unfortunately, by itself it exists more as an exercise in style than a story. Quentin Tarantino returns to filmmaking following a six year absence with a movie that indulges his great love of kung fu flicks to the extreme.
Sometimes you come upon a movie with no expectations and it ambushes you with a level of quality that seems to have no business being in that movie. School of Rock is just such a movie. I hoped to like the movie because I've been waiting for another movie to properly utilize the very funny Jack Black since High Fidelity but I didn't have high hopes. I was totally unprepared for the greatness of this movie. Not only is it a near perfect movie for Black, it comes complete with possibly the best child cast ever and a near perfect script from Mike White.
The movie's title indicates that culture shock is a factor here. Murray plays straight man to the oddities of Tokyo and Japanese culture. This is where he shows off just how good he a comedic actor is because he plays it all so amazingly subtly. Murray finds ways to set the whole theater howling with laughter with just a raised eyebrow or a widening of the eyes.
This movie is brilliantly constructed and wildly original, as well as being greatly entertaining. It deals largely with depressing material and yet manages to be funny and uplifting. Go see it. No excuses, just go see it. If you don't, I don't want to hear any complaints about never seeing any good movies.
