The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle

With a trailer out it couldn't be very long before a poster arrived too. Here it is. Pretty basic but I do like the way the cast is listed across the top as "DeNiro Russo Alexander Moose Squirrel."

The full trailer quietly snuck its way on to the net. If like me you failed to notice it for a couple days, check it out at the spots below.

This is a great publicity shot that gives us the clearest look yet at how all of the main characters are going to look. The moose and squirrel look just as they always have with just a touch of added depth. Fearless Leader (De Niro), Boris (Jason Alexander) and Natasha (Rene Russo) are suprisingly well matched to the original cartoons. It appears that the look of this movie is right on the money. This of course begs the question. Could it actually be any good? Recent history with adaptations of Jay Ward cartoons would indicate that there is no way this could succeed. But none of those movies looked this good or had this good a cast. Time will tell.

Below you see three brand new pictures from the set. The first shows Rene Russo, director Des McAnuff and Jason Alexander getting ready to shoot a scene. The second is Robert De Niro getting his makeup applied. The final shot is of Alexander and De Niro sitting around doing nothing. Is that exciting or what? They seem to have nailed the look of this movie but I still doubt it can make a good movie.

Universal is apparently pretty confident of this movie. The release date has been moved up two weeks from July 14th to June 30th.

Universal has actually released a teaser trailer for the movie. It essentially mimics the old Superman show, "Look! Up in the sky. It's a...," which then leads to Bullwinkle saying that he thinks it's a flying squirrel. Rocky then proceeds to fly across the sky and say see you next summer. De Niro also makes a brief appearance as Fearless Leader. The teaser is mostly of interest because this is the first time we get to see how Rocky and Bullwinkle look. Well, they look like themselves, but with a bit more depth than the original cartoons. If you don't feel like downloading the trailer you can see them for yourself below. AICN reports that filming was underway recently in Chicago. The scene involves Bullwinkle drving a car badly and crashing a lot. Stnad ins were used for the moose and squirrel to be replaced later with digital creations. The pictures below were taken during the shooting in question. According to a recent A&E Biography on Jonathon Winters, the comedian will be playing three parts in the movie. No idea what the parts are, but it's hard to go wrong with Winters.

Man this doesn't sound good. Apparently Universal screened some footage of the movie to licencees at a merchandising pary last week. The scene showed Fearless Leader (Robert De Niro) yelling at Boris and Natasha (Jason Alexander and Renee Russo). As part of his tirade is the classic line from Taxi Driver, "Are you talking to me? I don't see anyone else here, so you must be talking to me!" Maybe in the context of the scene it works, but right now it sounds pretty lame. We also have a few snapshots from the production. Click on them to see larger versions. Thanks to Cinescape.

We now know of one cameo appearance in the movie. A scene was recently filmed in which Boris and Natasha fall from the sky onto mattresses being carried by an old Jewish man. The man is played by Billy Crystal. Thanks to AICN.

Universal sent a press release about production of the movie. Nothing we didn't already know except that they included a brief description of the plot:
"In the film, the animated characters Rocky the Flying Squirrel and his erudite friend Bullwinkle J. Moose are living in a now desolate Frostbite Falls, barely surviving on diminishing residual checks from re-runs of their old television series. Meanwhile, back in Pottsylvania, Fearless Leader (De Niro) and his notorious spies Boris Badenov (Alexander) and Natasha Fatale (Russo) have escaped their cartoon existence and are reborn as characters of flesh and blood, and are headed for Hollywood. There the evil trio hatch a ruthless plan to take over the world, leaving Rocky and Bullwinkle to go head-to-head with their long-time nemeses Boris and Natasha, and stop them once and for all."
AICN also mentioned today that filming will be done on 86th street in Brooklyn on May 10-11. It will be a scene of Rocky flying around Brooklyn, so shooting will be done from a helicopter.

Filming is under way on the campus of Chapman University in California. The scenes shot there revolve around Bullwinkle returning to his alma mater Wossamotta U. The school used to be animated but isn't anymore. Bullwinkle is speaking to a crowd of protesters who don't want the campus returned to animated form. The moose and squirrel have apparently been living for years on royalties from their cartoon show. The FBI contacts them to help stop a plot by Fearless Leader, Boris and Natasha. Thanks to the LA Times.

This is a picture of Robert De Niro, Jason Alexander, and Rene Russo as they will appear in the movie. To be helpful pictures of their cartoon counterparts are also included. No word yet on what moose and squirrel look like, apart from the fact that they will be computer animated.

The live action adaptation of the classic cartoon continues to add big name stars. Randy Quaid has signed on in the part of FBI director Cappy van Trappment. Janeane Garofolo recently joined the cast to take on the part of a movie studio mogul as a cameo. This is in addition to Jason Alexander, Rene Russo, and Robert De Niro.

Apparently Mariah Carey won't nab the part of Natasha in the upcoming film. According to Variety Rene Russo is very close to signing on for the part. She would star opposite Jason Alexander as Boris and Robert De Niro as Fearless Leader. The moose and squirrel will be computer animated characters.

According to MTV's website singer Mariah Carey has reportedly tried out for the part of Natasha in the live action movie version of the classic cartoon. This is a joke right? Right?

Yes Universal Pictures is making this movie. The news is that Robert De Niro has taken a part as a villain in it. He will apparently play a man who tries to take over the world by hypnotizing people through their television sets on the eve of a presidential election. Jason Alexander stars as the duo's usual menace, Boris Badenov.
