News for June 12-16, 2000

Juwanna Mann

Tootsie in high tops. That's how this movie is being described. Great. Anyway, the producers say they intend to shoot parts of the movie in Rock Hill, South Carolina this August. The region played host to The Patriot production recently.

The movie is about a basketball player kicked out of the NBA for his on court antics. Desperate to play ball he pretends to be a woman and tries out for the WNBA. It should appear sometime in 2001.

See Spot Run

For some reason, Oscar nominated Michael Clarke Duncan is considering joining David Arquette in the comedy See Spot Run.

The movie is about a mailman (Arquette) who adopts a dog that is a former FBI drug sniffing dog. The dog had been in the witness protection program (no really) after a failed attempt to kill the dog. Duncan would be playing FBI agent Murdoch, the dog's former partner and trainer. Also in the film are Leslie Bibb, who plays Arquettes love interest and Angus Jones, who plays her son. Chris Faber and Dan Baron are responsible for the script. Shooting should begin in Vancouver next week.

I get to the part about the dog in the witness protection program and just start shaking my head.

Phone Booth

Did you get all excited when you heard Jim Carrey was going to star in Phone Booth for Joel Schumacher? Well you shouldn't have because it isn't going to happen. Carrey backed out of the project just as negotiations were getting started.

He originally took an interest because he loved the script and wanted to work with Schumacher again. However after thinking about it for a few days, Carrey felt the character wasn't one that he could embrace. The movie is still expected to shoot later this summer.

Thanks to Variety.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Thanks to a couple of script reviews, we can be reasonably sure that the current script for this project isn't very good. That's bad enough news for fans of Douglas Adams' trilogy of five books. Now we can add painfully slow progress to the list of woes. Adams was interviews by Salon concerning his new internet version of the Guide going wireless. Along the way he was asked about the movie's progress.

It's now looking like it will be released in 2002. I can tell you nothing original or startling or new about this, except that it's Hollywood doing what it does best, which is take one step forward, two steps back. The director is Jay Roach who did "Austin Powers," the producer is Roger Birnbaum who has had his fingers in all kinds of movies [including "Rain Man," "G.I. Jane" and "The Sixth Sense"].

There's a lot of talk about different actors, but nothing I can tell you about yet. It's not being cast quite yet, and it's just being budgeted. So we're basically waiting for the green light, and another draft of the screenplay.

Juwanna Mann

I still say this movie sounds like one of what had to have been dozens of 1980s comedies but it's still moving forward. Vivica A. Fox has joined the cast as the leading woman. Jesse Vaughan will direct the movie about an NBA player kicked out of the league for his on-court antics. Determined to continue playing basketball he pretends to be a woman so that he can join the WNBA. He then has to try and keep his identity a secret but starts to fall for a teammate, Fox. Filming should start next month on the Morgan Creek production.
