Mortal Kombat 3: Domination
4 February, 2000
This news just made my day. I've been a big fan of the whole Mortal Kombat series of games, movies, TV show and whatever since the early 90s. This probably makes you say that I have no taste. In reponse I would say, "Yeah, and?" I may use the nickname Batman these days (not my idea I assure you) but back in my college days I was known as Sub Zero (also not my idea). I used to play the original Mortal Kombat in the student union after dinner every day. I was particularly fond of the Sub Zero character. This lead to a friend of mine yelling "Go Sub Zero, go!" right in my ear as I tried to play. Before long everyone called me that and by the time I graduated I had numerous friends who did not even my real name. When the first movie came out I dragged my wife to go see it. To this day I'm still hearing complaints about that. I even enjoyed the TV series to a degree. It was a refreshingly trashy combination of half naked women and extended fight sequences.
So why am I boring you with this? Well it appears that there will be a third Mortal Kombat movie. Entitled Mortal Kombat Domination, the movie will be shot mostly in London. Producer Lawrence Kasanoff enjoyed filming part of the last movie there, leading to the decision to film most of the third movie in England. Kasanoff also wants it known that Domination will be more like the first movie and not the dreadful sequel. Returning characters will be Liu Kang, Rayden, Sonja, Jax, Johnny Cage, Scorpion, and of course Sub-Zero. Apparently Ray Park will be taking the role of Reiko, a character from the Mortal Kombat 4 game.
The odds of this movie being any good are of course close to zero. Video games have paper thin plots making them particularly bad ground to base a movie on. But that does mean they make for delightfully bad movies. The kind you can't help but laugh at. The kind of movie that tries really hard to be serious and you get an overwhelming case of the giggles from it. So I will be gleefully looking forward to this one.
