Panic Room (2002)

I was privileged to see two good movies this weekend. One top notch black comedy (Death to Smoochy) and one Hichcockian turn of the screw thriller. Panic Room has been a movie I'd been looking forward to for a long time and when I heard some negative reviews (script and movie) I began to fear the quality. However, David Fincher and his solid cast does not disappoint.

The story begins in New York City where Meg Altman (Jodie Foster) is looking for an apartment for herself and her daughter. She is going through a divorce and decides to relocate in a beautiful apartment, equipped with a new fad known as a "panic room". The panic room is like a bomb shelter for the patrons of the house. If a burglar breaks in, the owners flee to a room with closed access televisions, plumbing, and telephone. Upon their first night in the apartment, the Altman's find themselves seeking the solace of the panic room from three robbers: Junior (Jared Leto), Burnham (Forest Whitaker), and Raoul (Dwight Yoakam). The robbers are in the apartment for a hidden safe housing about 3 million dollars, which just happens to be located under the panic room. Suspense ensues and it's top notch.

Fincher does a great job on tightening the screws like a good Hitchcock movie. This is in no doubt helped by the writing talents of David Koepp. It's a realistic story with real characters that are all portrayed extremely well. Foster is at her best here and the young girl who plays her daughter should be an upcoming star. Fincher uses some great unique camera angles to bring the suspense to it's climax (think Fight Club techniques in The Game). It's really worth a viewing.
