Favorite Lines from the Movie: "Oh, that's just not right!" "You've got to treasure the little things." Reviews Batman I'm astonished at how much I liked this movie. I was expecting a bit of light comedy. What I found instead was a razor sharp parody of all things Star Trek. My geek roots are probably going to show through here but this movie nailed the entire Trek experience. I don't just mean the show and the following movies. No, I mean all of it. The actors who have toured the conventions instead of an actual career. The fans who obsess over every little detail. The cliches invented by Star Trek. It even parodied the music. I kept expecting the music to shift into the theme from Wrath of Khan. This is probably the first movie I've seen Tim Allen in that didn't make me want to cringe. Don't get me wrong. As a comedian I think he's hysterical. But until now he hasn't proven he can handle himself on the big screen. Sigourney Weaver shows a flair for comedy that has been missing since Ghostbusters. She also shows an astonishing amount of cleavage. I'm guessing she was really well paid to let it all hang out like that. The person who impressed me the most was Tony Shalhoub. This guy can really act and has a great sense for comedy. He needs to be in more movies. Sharp writing, good acting... hmm... what else? How about some top notch special effects? I've seen a lot of serious sci-fi movies that didn't look anywhere near this good. They perfectly matched the cheesy design styles of early Trek with state of the art effects. Makes for a nice look. Oh and the villain Sarris had a great look. The tiny arms on top of his head reminded me of some of the aliens that would appear in Bugs Bunny cartoons. Shankster Galaxy Quest is by far one of the best films that I have seen this year. I think the thing that helps Galaxy Quest stand apart from other satires is that it is actually well done. It does a good job of merging the imagination of Sci-Fi movies and the reality of the whole "Trekkie" movement. The acting is terrific, the effects are excellent, and the story is very well thought out. All in all this is a surprisingly good film that anyone would enjoy, especially a Sci-Fi geek. Just one side comment, I don't ever remember Sigorney Weaver having that much cleavage ever before, I'm not complaining, just pointing it out... Dogburt Red Sonja Gramps |
