X-Men

News for April 2000:

28 April, 2000

Writer Joss Whedon talked to Empire magazine about his brief involvement with X-Men. He was brought in to add some spice to the final fight scene. "I said, 'I think you've got a greater problem than that'. I didn't think the script was any good, so I did a major overhaul of the script. And yeah, I was the only real X-Men fan on the project that I know of. The director threw it out... they went back to another version. A teeny bit of what I had written got in and I heard that more of it got in after the read-through. I don't know, but basically I was treated incredibly shabbily. Not by the director - in movies that's his prerogative. But I was just staggered by what I thought was a terrible decision - I actually got a copy of the script later and found out that they had thrown out the entire re-write I had done."

Okay so it's clear that he doesn't really like the script or having his ideas ignored.

Executive Producer Tom DeSanto talked to Comics Continuum about post production work. "We're under a time crunch, but we're on schedule and in good shape."

Over at Coming Soon! they've managed to get an animatic for the battle between Wolverine and Sabretooth atop the Statue of Liberty. It's a short little clip but gives a clear idea of what at least part of that fight will look like.

MystiqueFinally, AICN managed to snag a detailed photo of Rebecca Romijn-Stamos in her Mystique makeup/costume. Check it out and remember that drool is bad for your keyboard.

James Marsden is feeling really chatty these days. He talked to the Calgary Sun recently and had a few things to say about the movie. "I had never read the comics before I auditioned for the role, but I had played the video game a couple of times so I had some idea of what I was getting into," says Marsden. "When I was cast, I got hold of as many of the comics as I could and devoured them."

Yeah, yeah, we know, none of the actors are ever fans of the comic. What was the filming like? "I had it much easier than many of my co-stars," he says. "I didn't have to hang from riggings all day long and I didn't have a super state-of-the-art fight on the top of the Statue of Liberty like Wolverine does."

So what did you have to do to work your "super powers"? "I operated the beam in my visor and the technicians would throw on lights that turned the whole room red. The special-effects people are adding the laser blasts with their computers."

Several new images from the movie appeared in the latest issue of Comic Scene 2000. There are several great shots of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The best shot is probably that of Professor X and Magneto playing chess together though. The last shot is a bit of a spoiler so the thumbnail has been blurred if you'd rather not know.

James Marsden (Cyclops) talked to Popcorn about the movie. Asked to describe the movie he said, "It's different than any other Marvel comic book movie out there. Very Dark. Very cold. Very serious… which is what I think fans wanted, but definitely plenty of action, plenty of style, too…Bryan's number one priority was for this piece to be character driven, because that's why the comic book has lasted as long as it has… because the back stories of these characters and the universe is so complex. That was his number one priority. I think he pulled it off. I think it's going to be a really good movie, but it's not like it's going to be "My Dinner With Cyclops". It will be a movie for everyone. There will be plenty of action and they're rushing right now to get the special effects done, because we have zero time to do anything."

When asked why he took the part Marsden said, "The reason I did this movie is that Bryan Singer is one of the most talented directors out there right now. He took a comic book and created a whole universe unto itself."

19 April, 2000

Producer Tom DeSanto talked to Mania about the movie. Speaking of director Bryan Singer he says, "We're friends and we respect each other. I think we challenge each other. I tend to err on the side of crass commercialism and saccharine sometimes. And he challenges me to be better than that. It's sort of Captain Kirk and Spock. Bryan's very logical. Bryan's very, very smart. Bryan doesn't make movies. He makes films."

It sounds like the costumes sprang from Singer's ideas. "Sometimes, it's frustrating, but what he did, he challenged my preconceived notions on things like code names and costumes. Why do they use these things? And it was coming up with answers to those problems, that still made them costumes and code names, but gave them meaning."

Further explaing DeSanto says, "In comic books, it's just a given. You go out and put on a costume and give yourself a name. But why? And I was like, 'Well, they just wear costumes. They just wear costumes.' And he's like, 'Why do they wear costumes?' But he was right. Why do they wear costumes? Why do they call each other Cyclops or Wolverine or Storm? And why is Jean Grey just Jean Grey? And it's great, because we address all these things."

12 April, 2000

Famke Janssen talked to Talk magazine about X-Men. "I knew having been a model would be an obstacle (in becoming an accomplished actress)... but I didn't realize quite how big... (after GoldenEye) I was scared I would go into B-movie territory."

When asked why she took the part of Jean Grey she says, "The character of Jean Grey is very different. She's a cerebral character, not Ms. Kung Fu. Besides, the chance to work with Bryan Singer was the deciding factor in taking the movie. (pause) I've learned that as much as I want to have my career my way, in the end it's a business. It's a game you have to play."

Well doesn't she sound thrilled about the movie?

Thanks to Stax.

The first full trailer is here and it is cool. I'm actually very impressed with this trailer. For the first time I didn't give a second thought to the costumes. Maybe I've just gotten used to them but they simply aren't an issue for me anymore. The action looks great, the photography looks great and the effects look great. The only thing that matters now is how good is the script and how well it comes together. The trailer comes in three sizes plus a fullscreen version for people with broadband access.

For those of you who can't or won't download the trailer, check out some stills taken directly from the trailer.

CyclopsTwo quick things today, both trailer related. First off the official website is announcing that the new trailer will be available for download today at 11PM EST. The other thing is that Coming Attractions has managed to nab several images from the trailer early. I've included my favorite of the bunch. It shows Cyclops firing an optic blast. This was supposed to be in the original trailer but was forced out by the MPAA as too violent apparently. Why it's okay now is beyond me.

3 April, 2000

Professor XThe official website has added another photo. This time we see a shot of Professor X as he confronts Magneto.

Thanks to 'Bliss'.

On Wednesday, April 5, Access Hollywood will unveil the full trailer for the movie.
