Don't count this movie out just yet. According to Dark Horizons, Paramount has stated that at this time they have not changed their plans concerning the release of the movie. A decision on any possible changes regarding the film will be made sometime after January 1, 2002.

The latest word on this movie is not good at all. According to the New York Post, Paramount is shelving the movie. In light of the recent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, the studio now apparently finds the movie too distasteful to release. The report states that Paramount has notified the Montreal Bureau of Cinema & Television that it may be several years before the movie is released, if even then.

Our master script snoop Deadpool got his hands on this movie's script and gave a glowing review.

Seriously, I really love the script. I was stunned to see how good it is. Of course, four people worked on the script, sometimes that makes it even worse but in this case, it was just perfect. In fact, I think this film could spice up the franchise and send it to new heights in the 21st century. The story is well constructed and is well written. A must read thriller with interesting twists and turns here and there. It has a lot in common with Black Sunday but doesn't borrow too much from it.

The week wouldn't be complete without and update on this movie. So without further ado let's turn the floor over to someone I like to call 'Anonymous #4.'

"SOAF wrapped this morning at a local TV station, where they filmed some sportscasters broadcasting from the Super Bowl. According to a friend at the station, the crew looked tired, but happy."

20 June, 2001

All we seem to do around here is stir up debate on this film. Today we've got four scoopers with something to say on the film, primarily the budget. Here's 'Anonymous #1':

Sorry, but "Anonymous" has got several facts really wrong.

He writes: "They filmed in Montreal, Death Valley, Baltimore and Washington. The film finally wrapped late night on June 10th."

They have not wrapped. They finished in Montreal on June 13th ... they only today shot in Washington DC, they have not yet shot in Death Valley, and they have no shooting scheduled at all for Baltimore. They are scheduled to wrap in L.A. around June 27th.

Then we hear from 'Anonymous #2' who had a fairly similar story:

The budget is quite a bit lower than $140 million Canadian. It's somewhere in the 80-90 million range, American.

Also, they did NOT wrap on June 10th.

They didn't finish shooting in Montreal until the end of last week, and then they went to Washington D.C., and now they're shooting in the California desert. They will wrap next week in L.A.

Now here's the story from 'Anonymous #3' with some comment on that budget issue.

Another thing "Anonymous" got wrong is the budget. He claims it's "around $140 million Canadian". That comes to about $92.4 million American. He's wrong. It's in the 80s, which puts it very very close to being on budget.

Finally, we hear from 'Gecko' this interesting little tidbit.

I was listening to 101.1 in DC and they said that Ben Affleck had been spotted around town quite a bit this weekend. Someone called in to tell the DJ that Affleck was staying at The Four Seasons, but when they called the hotel denied it.

You can't believe everything you read. Particularly when you read it on the internet. That's always true but this latest little scoop comes from an anonymous source on the production and it just helps drive the point home. We believe you mystery person but maybe a little more detail next time?

Just for the record, there are a lot of people that are completely wrong on this site. I had a principle role in "SOAF" so I would hope I know whats going on. The budget is around $140 million CDN. They filmed in Montreal, Death Valley, Baltimore and Washington. The film finally wrapped late night on June 10th. Just thought I would clear up a few things. The cast and crew were great, and this project is going to be a huge hit when it debuts in 2002.

Thanks to 'Anonymous.'

The details keep rolling in on this movie. Today we've got word on a possible new filming location. If anyone else knows more on this give us a buzz.

I just heard the end of a discussion on the radio about extras being needed for the filming of The Sum of All Fears at Tysons Cornor, VA next Tuesday (June 5th).

Thanks to 'Anonymous.'

An anonymous yet kind hearted soul sent us some comments that almost completely contradict last week's report. So if there are any other kind souls (or even the original one) out there who would like to chime in with more detail, we'd love to get the whole and proper story.

Philip Baker Hall isn't playing Lt. Emmet Ryan. IN fact, there's no such character in the movie. Hall plays Secretary of Defense David Becker.

Also, the budget is nowhere near 100million. They're only a day or two behind schedule and very close to being on budget.

Sean at the Jack Ryan Fan Site sent us a few little tidbits to digest. First off, the official site should be opening soon. Secondly Philip Baker Hall has joined the cast as Lieutenant Emmet Ryan. Third and most interesting, the movie is already well past its $100 million budget and climbing rapidly. That's the first I've heard of that rumor. We'll keep our ears open for anything that can confirm it or explain it.

We've got a great report that just came in from 'CC' on the filming at Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

I spent 2 days at the set of THE SUM OF ALL FEARS. I was planning on just being one of the extras that sit in the stadium to make it look like the stadium was full of spectators, but luck was on my side and one of the producers came into the stands and chose me to be an extra ON THE SET, I was hired as a photo journalist taking pics of the Super Bowl. I am in the scene where the secret service rush the President (James Cromwell)out of the stadium because of the bomb threat. I am standing at the EXIT with other photographers and we are held back by the secret service as the President is rushed by.

It was a fantastic 2 days and I enjoyed it a lot, I got to meet James Cromwell and Morgan Freeman. Ben Affleck never showed up at the stadium. James Cromwell is a very nice person, kind and very tall LOL and Morgan Freeman is bilingual. I was surprised to hear him speak french.

Something weird that happend on the set, I had my own camera with film in it and was taking pictures. Security came over to check me out and my camera. When they found out that it was indeed my camera with film they wanted me to hand over the film. I told them I was not told that I was not allowed to take pictures and that if they insisted on taking my film they better be ready to replace it. LOL. She went off to speak to someone and came back and told me that I could keep my film but not to take any more pictures and that they better not see any pictures show up in the tabloids LOL.

It was fun and I had a great time, I got to eat with the stars and mingle with the Montreal Allouettes and Toronto Argaunauts (I am sure I mispelled that) If anyone else was there i would like to talk with you. I met a lot of nice people and I am looking for an agency in the Montreal area the handles parts for extras. If anyone has info please post it in the forums.

There was a press conference in Montreal recently to promote the film. Affleck was present and had some comments on the movie.

Regarding taking the part after Harrison Ford passed, he says "Obviously there are enormous shoes to fill. I'm standing on the shoulder of giants, so to speak. It's a sort of reinvention (of the character), which can be a big risk messing with such a proven formula."

The movie is shooting in Montreal as opposed to a California location to take advantage of the weak Canadian dollar. Producer Mace Neufeld says, "There have been no positive moves made by the (California) state or federal government. We would love to shoot in our home town but it's not economically feasible."

Affleck thinks a recent tax on foreign actors working in Canada isn't a smart move but isn't personally upset over it. "That's probably a big mistake. A major reason why (the film) business has boomed is because of the relationship the (Canadian) government has cultivated with producers," said Affleck. "But being a great socialist myself, I think I should pay more taxes. I wish our leader in the States thought the same way."

Thanks to the Edmonton Journal.

Do you live near Montreal and want to appear in the movie? Here's your chance. Extras are needed for a scene in Olympic Stadium, which is playing host to the Super Bowl. You can find all the details on the shoot, scheduled for May 9-10, here. If you go, be sure to send us a detailed report.

The plot is described as this by that site:

When the president of Russia suddenly dies and is succeeded by a man about whom little is known, tension increases as old fears ignite new paranoia. Director of Central Intelligence Bill Cabot (Freeman) recruits a young analyst from the Russia desk, Jack Ryan (Affleck), to supply insight and advice. Then the unthinkable happens: the capital of Chechnya is leveled by a nuclear bomb. America is quick to blame the Russians and mistrust escalates despite Ryan's certainty that other players are at work. He is right. Terrorists bent on provoking open war between the two nations are moving behind the scenes to manufacture and escalate a conflict. When they successfully detonate a second bomb outside Baltimore during the Super Bowl, the world is pushed inexorably towards war... unless Ryan can supply the needed proof to stem the tide of disaster in time.

While most of us were scratching our heads over the decision to cast Ben Affleck in the role of Jack Ryan when Harrison Ford opted not to reprise the role in Sum of All Fears, auther Tom Clancy was delighted. He hasn't been happy with the way his books have been translated into movies. Now with Affleck aboard, he has decided to write several more novels geared toward a young Jack Ryan.

New manager Michael Ovitz had apparently worked hard to improve Clancy's relationship with Paramount, which has helped get this movie going. "We want his support," a top studio executive acknowledged. "There's nothing you like better than him saying, 'I love this movie.'" Another says Ovitz was "unbelievably helpful and effective at managing Tom Clancy," adding, "The whole Clancy relationship has turned around."

Clancy had been enjoying torturing the studio over the details on this project prior to Affleck joining up. In fact the actor had to go visit Clancy at his Maryland home. Affleck was startled to discover that there was a working tank on the property.

A report on Dark Horizons today gave us some more details on this project. Morgan Freeman has joined the cast and will be playing CIA Director Bill Cabot. Also joining the cast are James Cromwell, Liev Schreiber, Bridget Moynahan, Ciaran Hands and Alan Bates.

The story appears to differ from the novel and from previous Jack Ryan movies. Below is from Paramount's press release.

Ben AffleckBen Affleck is Jack Ryan. Huh? That's right, Affleck has signed on the dotted line to take over the role vacated by Harrison Ford. CIA agent Ryan was previously played on screen by the considerably older Alec Baldwin (Hunt for Red October) and Ford (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger), which makes this casting more than a bit mystifying in my eyes. Ford was contracted to due another Ryan film but balked at the script so Paramount got a different face to play the part. The script, to be directed by Phil Noyce, is by Akiva Goldsman (Batman and Robin) and Paul Attanasio (Sphere).

Affleck is also in talks to star in Cinderella Man. He would play a man who takes up boxing during the Great Depression to feed his family. Billy Bob Thornton is in talks to direct. Universal bought the pitch by Cliff Hollingsworth based on a real person, and had it written by Charlie Mitchell.

Affleck, currently filming Pearl Harbor would first shoot Sum of All Fears, possibly this fall, before moving on to Cinderella Man.

Thanks to Variety.

Apparently Harrison Ford is having a hard time settling on his next project. First he dropped out of Steven Soderbergh's Traffic, then he waffled on Sony's Gemini Man and now he's bailed out of another project. The fourth Jack Ryan novel by Tom Clancy to be adapted for the big screen may have to go forward without Ford. He and director Philip Noyce have been unable to agree on the script. The most recent version by Paul Attanasio was finished recently. He has a contract to do two more Ryan movies which he signed following the success of Patriot Games.

Ford is apparently looking for a big action movie to star in but has yet to find one he's comfortable with.

Thanks to Harrison Ford HQ and The Hollywood Reporter.
