Spawn 2 (????)
Plot: Unknown.
News:
27 February, 2002
Screenwriter Steve Niles spoke to Comics Continuum about the project's status. "Spawn 2 is coming along great," says Niles. "The script has gone through several polishes and we're working closely with Don Murphy to make it something special. I think the biggest surprise will be how different this film will be from the first. I think Spawn 2 will be much more accessible to all types of movie fans because it will cross the lines between the superhero, horror and crime genres".

From the perpetual development hell where it dwells, Spawn 2 is slowly creeping toward the light. Todd McFarlane's first draft of the script has been approved by New Line Cinema. Now a second draft is being prepared. If this goes smoothly and production can begin immediately after receiving approval, then it might be possible to release the movie in 2000. Late 2000. Beau Smith of Todd McFarlane Productions said, "I've read the script twice, and it's a very good cop drama. It involves crime with a touch of the supernatural. It's one of the creepier stories Spawn's been attached to." New Line has previously shown a lack of faith in this direction. They have said they would prefer a sequel in the same vein as the original. Having seen the original, I'm now sufficiently recovered from the emotional scarring to say that would be a mistake. If a sequel must be made, let McFarlane make it his way. It couldn't be any worse than the first time around. At least I hope it can't.

Apparently New Line Cinema is currently checking out the proposed script for the Spawn sequel. The picture to the left is a possible promotional poster, probably meant to stir up interest in the project. Pretty cool looking though.

All may not be well with this project. Todd McFarlane recently spoke of his desire to make a darker R rated sequel, instead of a PG-13 rated action fest. However the folks at New Line Cinema don't necessarily agree. The Star Power Chronicle got this from a source at New Line:
"It is a shame but McFarlane is not being realistic. Yes 'Spawn' was a reasonable success for our studio, but not the blockbuster we imagined it would be. Making a 'Spawn' sequel with an "R" rating would cut off our nose to spite our face. It would alienate half of the Spawn audience, the preteens, that went to see the original film in the first place. I understand McFarlane is trying to create support and excitement through the press for a "R" rated sequel, but I'm not so sure it is going to fly. We are not even sure if there will be a sequel."

I hope this information is correct because the original Spawn movie ranks very high on my personal worst list. The sequel project seems to have been stalled for some time. Occasionally a story pops up about Todd McFarlane writing the script and turning it in. Well, this story isn't about the project getting anywhere, but about the story. He intends this movie to be an R-rated suspense drama. Special effects will be kept to a strict minimum. It's really going to be a murder mystery. There will be nine main characters, but none of Spawn's enemies from the comics. It will include detectives Sam Burke and "Twitch" Williams, who are investigating a serial killer.
"One thing that I am adamant about is that the reason why Frankenstein, Dracula and The Wolf Man were successful was because when they came out, they were the only thing that was out of the ordinary. In hindsight, by the time you have the Devil, the demon, the Violator and the Clown, you have no uniqueness to your character. So what I am doing is stripping them all away and there's only going to be one unique thing: our guy Spawn. He's going to be pushed in the shadows. He's going to be like the Bogey Man."

The script has been completed and turned in for reading by Newline executives. It is a departure from the comics, but similar to the HBO animated series. It will be darker and more intense than the first movie, not for the kids.

I'm generally known for my ability to enjoy just about any film no matter how bad. The original Spawn managed to land on the short list of films that I couldn't find the good in. So it is with great sadness that I must report that work has begun on a sequel. According to Cinescape, Todd McFarlane and John Leekley are currently writing the script. Producer Terry Fitzgerald had this to say: "The majority of the fantasy elements are removed from the storyline. Do not expect to see the Violater, he has been retired for the time being. Nor expect to see Angel as has all the rumors on the internet state. The story is very urban and noir. Expect a definate R rating. Expect a storyline revolving around Sam and Twitch and a very irate Al Simmons. Wanda also plays a pivotal role this time around. As for more story info I must keep somewhat quiet until the new year."
