According to Variety, DreamWorks is looking to release this film mid April 2004, in other words, right in the middle of one of Disney's favorite times to release an animated film.

According to Coming Attractions, John Cleese has been cast in the movie. He will play the role of Fiona's father.

Speaking to CNN, Jeffery Katzenberg gave some idea of where the story might be going. He said that the sequel will start with Shrek and Fiona returning from their honeymoon. They get a letter from her parents, an invitation to dinner. They don't know what's happened to her.

The sequel will be written by David Stem and David Weiss according to Variety. How this fits with the previously announced writing duo of Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio is unknown.

Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers are in negotiations to return as the voices of the main characters in a sequel to this summer's monster computer animated hit Shrek. Reportedly the trio could end up earning about $5 million apiece, or approximately $35,000 an hour for the sequel.

Considering the enormous box office for Shrek, it should surprise no one that DreamWorks has announced plans to make a sequel. The screenwriters of the original, Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio have been asked to write the sequel which will apparently add a fairy godmother.
