Scooby Doo (2002)
Plot: Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and a talking dog named Scooby roam the country in a van named the Mystery Machine searching for mysteries to solve. This live action movie will be based on the popular cartoon. Every episode featured extreme cowardice by Shaggy and Scooby, extreme snacking by Shaggy and Scooby, several silly chases and the eventual unmasking of the villain who always claims he "would've gotten away with it too if it weren't for those nosy kids."

This next piece was sent to us by the scooper known as 'Mason' which I don't believe to be any relation to the immortal 'Full Mason' who helped start this site in the first place.
Here is an interview from Starz! movie news with the movie's 2 leading boys that are playing Fred and Shaggy. Matthew Lillard-"Playing Shaggy was scary. I mean, playing a guy that is so iconic. Scooby Doo is the number 1 international cartoon. It has been for like 10 years." Freddy Prinze Jr.-"It was so much fun. We had a blast on the set the movie is going to be great, it's hysterical and we want to do a second scooby movie. We hope it's a hit at the box office and I am glad that I picked this movie." Also here is a little info about the cameo scene the bad guys from the shows might be in the cameo scenes but the people who are in the cameo scenes are going to wear the bad guys mask as a costume and these are bad guys costumes that are going to be in the cameo scenes: caveman, hyde, creeper, black knight, and the witch and zombie, also I heard that scooby dum and scooby dee are going to in the cameo scenes.

The first teaser trailer is now online. You can find a copy here.

Well kids, 'Kim' dropped in to hand us another fine photo of this movie's namesake. It's just the big dog this time and more of a closeup. No matter how the movie turns out it appears we should be getting some top notch special effects on Scooby though.

I love checking my mail to find something nifty like this has been sent in by a reader. 'Kim' found this shot of the cast floating about somewhere and sent it right in. This gives us the first really good look at CGI Scooby. He looks pretty good I think but let's wait until we see him moving to make any judgements.

That lucky guy JoBlo somehow found the teaser poster for the movie sitting on his desk. It features a cute tag line, those awful costumes and the first ever look at the CGI Scooby. It's too small to make out much detail but it looks like a cross between the cartoon Scooby and a real dog. Interesting.

Hollyfeld got a chance to interview screenwriter James Gunn on all sorts of topics including just how hot Sarah Michelle Gellar really is. You can read the interview here.
24 May, 2001
First off, let me point you to Hollyfeld's remarkable review of the script. Why do I say remarkable? Well, it's probably because it is possibly the only positive review of the script ever seen. You can find it here.
In other news, it appears that a good band will be appearing in the film.
Apparantly The band "Sugar Ray" are going to be a part of the film, they will be filming on Tangalooma Island QLD...

It would appear that Sarah Michell Gellar has suffered an ankle injury but just how it happened is a point of confusion. Coming Attractions ran a report saying she injured it while filming at Bond University.
"Sarah Michelle Gellar sprained her ankle while filming today. How do I know this you may ask? I saw it with my own two eyes this morning. They are currently filming parts of Scooby-Doo at this university (Bond Uni, Gold Coast). I would have taken pictures but security guards nearly killed a friend for trying that, so I didn't."
However Kathryn from the very up to date Australian Made Movies wrote in with a somewhat different story.
In relation to a report (elsewhere) that Sarah Michelle Gellar sprained her ankle whilst filming at Bond Uni. This is what I was told by Bond Uni when I phoned them.
Filming was done at Bond University, Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th April The only star involved with the filming and on set was Freddie Prinze Jnr and Sarah Michelle Gellar and Rowan Atkinson were not on set at all. This was relayed to me by the person from Bond who had close contact with the production company and the location manager and Bond Uni. To his knowledge and belief she was not on set.
The filming was done of a building made up to represent The Pentagon.

Australian Made Movies snapped a bunch of shots of the Wet 'n' Wild amusement park where some of the movie is being shot. This is one of the water slides at the park. You can find lots more photos at their site.

The first official cast photo has been released and if anything, it's scarier than first thought. These costumes are right on the money as far as the original cartoon goes. Kudos on the accuracy factor guys. However on the taste and good looks factor, I think we're talking negative numbers. Let's pray that these costumes are only related to the sequences of the group as younger crime solvers. If not it's going to be a long painful movie to watch.

Access Hollywood ran a brief segment on the filming of this movie in Tennyson, Australia. The segment gives us a good look at Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred. Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini can be seen at a distance as Shaggy and Velma respectively. It looks as if they are going to stick very close to the costumes the gang wore in the shows. This isn't necessarily a good thing. You wouldn't blink if you saw them in the cartoon but in real life, zoinks, those are some seriously ugly outfits. Anyway, take a look at the stills below from the segment to see what I mean.

In case you were wondering what the movie version of the Mystery Machine would look like, now you can stop. Here it is. This photo is courtesy of the Slayer Sheila website which also adds that Sarah Michelle Gellar will be shooting some scenes in the movie this week in Brisbane, Australia and then will leave awhile. She will presumably return at a later date to shoot more of the movie. Production is expected to go for about five months.

Rowan Atkinson (Bean) is apparently in talks with Warner Bros. to take the role of the movie's main villain. Production is set to start February 13 in Australia.

Screenwriter James Gunn sat down with Daily Radar to talk about the challenge of writing a script based on the cartoon. Asked about how he envisions the movie, Gunn responds "I wanted to take a pop-culture icon like Scooby-Doo and look at him from a different angle. I wanted to take the weird and hopefully fascinating journey from a two-dimensional, 22-minute cartoon to a three-dimensional, 90-minute movie. The problem with most cartoons-to-movies is that they attempt to be exact replicas of the cartoons -- people speaking like cartoons, etc. I never wanted to simply watch a couple hundred episodes of Scooby-Doo cartoons and then vomit them out in a different order, longer and with real people. Instead, I wanted to say, 'Let's take it as fact that there's this dog that can talk, and this group of mystery-solving teenagers, who have, in the past, come up against numerous men in masks posing as supernatural entities, and let's take it as a fact that all the other traditions of Scooby-Doo really happened as well. If that were all real, what would these people be like? What would be their strengths and weaknesses? What problems would they have between them? What are they like between mysteries? What don't we see on the show? In essence, if they are real, who are they?' That was a starting point for me, while simultaneously putting Mystery Inc. in a bigger, more threatening situation than they've ever been in before."
More importantly, Gunn was asked about the inclusion of the much despised Scrappy-Doo character. "I can tell you I hate that little motherf*cker with all my heart and soul," says Gunn. Well put.

First off the casting news. For some perverse reason, Matthew Lillard has been cast in the role of shaggy. That means we have Lillard and Prinze working together again for the first time since Wing Commander. Anybody who thought their first effort together was so good that it simply had to be done again should now leave.
Second we have Stax's opinion on the state of the script. He got a hold of the March 17, 2000 copy of James Gunn's screenplay and jotted down his thoughts.
Contrary to opinions found elsewhere online, I did not find this draft to be "the worst thing ever made" at all. Now, I've heard that Craig Titley's script was great and that Jay Kogen and Mike Myers' attempts were atrocious but since I haven't read those scripts I can't vouch for either opinion. So many fanboy films go through this very public grilling nowadays that I can't take these "this is gonna suck" rants serious anymore. X-Men was supposed to bomb. It didn't. Ditto Charlie's Angels. I hated the script for Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas yet all the early reviews seem generally positive. Even Wild Wild West, as bad a film as it was, ended up turning a profit, I think. So for every Avengers there is a Brady Bunch to offset its failure. That's why these classic TV show/cartoon film remakes keep getting produced. The risk is apparently worth the reward.
Did I care about the characters here? Sure, about as much I expected to. Was the story amusing? Sure, not a laughfest but neither was the TV show, in my opinion. Did I feel like I wasted my time experiencing this? Nope. Scooby-Doo accomplished what I anticipated it would. Is this the cast I'd like to have seen in it? With the exception of Ricci, honestly, no. Will I still see the final film? Yeah, but I probably would've even if I didn't like the script. Face it, this just may be one of those projects that's critic-proof so you may as well sit back and enjoy it for what it is. Runtil rext rime… – STAX

According to a report on Ain't It Cool News, Scooby-Doo will not be played by a real dog. He will be a 3D computer animation. That seems reasonable. Only a CGI creation could do the kinds of things Scooby does.
The report also mentions that director Raja Gosnell has confirmed that he wants Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar for the parts of Fred and Daphne.
3 November, 2000
The casting rumors continue to swirl. Now Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar are being courted for the roles of Fred and Daphne respectively. I'm sure Buffy fans will be delighted but have you seen her recent movies? Have you seen any of Prinze's movies. My enthusiasm dips lower yet.
24 October, 2000
Coming Attractions is reporting a rumor that Christina Ricci (Sleepy Hollow) has been offered the role of Velma. I can see that. I don't know why she'd do it but I can see it.
17 October, 2000
A live action movie based on the popular cartoon Scooby Doo has been rumored forever. Now it is a reality. Warner Bros. has given the green light to the project. Production is scheduled to begin in February 2001. Shooting will take place in Australia. Raja Gosnell (Big Momma's House) is set to direct.
Gosnell was being courted by Warner Bros. for this project and Fox for a live action version of the comic book Fantastic Four. Warners are hoping that this movie could be the start of a new franchise for them. The movie will be from a script by James Gunn. Details on the story weren't made available but it shouldn't be too hard to predict. The animated series showed the group of young sleuths arriving at some spooky spot to investigate a mystery. Inevitably they stumble on the truth and unmask the villain posing as some evil creature. There's no word yet on how Scooby Doo, a dog semi capable of speech, will be handled.

Believe it or not a live action version of the cartoon classic is on the fast track at Warner Bros. James Gunn has finished his draft of the script. The original script was written by Mike Myers and Jay Kogan who withdrew from the project. The script is supposed to be along the lines of Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
The studio would like Myers to play Shaggy although nothing is definite.
9 February, 2000
The possibility of a live action Scooby Doo movie has been floating around for quite awhile. Apparently at one point Mike Myers had written a script for it but that was dropped. There is something going on though. According to the NY Daily News, Jennifer Love Hewitt has been offered the role of Daphne in the movie.
At the same time rumors continue to persist that a third I Know... slasher movie is in the works. Australian Big Hit Magazine says that shooting would begin in December and that Hewitt, Brandy and Muse Watson are all signed to star again. It also states that Freddie Prinze Jr. refuses to do another sequel. In the same article in the Daily News however, Hewitt says "I mean how many of those slasher movies can you do? I get chased by a fisherman with a hook in two films! Can you believe it?" when asked about the possibility. So essentially we have a big pile of rumors and no facts.
