Some new pictures have appeared from the films and they're pretty interesting. Here you can see Morpheus addressing the crowd in the city of Zion. It matches up pretty well with the report we had on this scene some time back. You can find a couple more pictures from the films right here.

Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) spoke to SCI FI Wire about the story for the twin sequels. "Essentially, there is the journey of Neo [Keanu Reeves] into a greater understanding of himself and how this whole world came about. He has a very strong journey towards truth—his own truth and the truth of the Matrix and the creation of the Matrix. Then there is another strong storyline, which is the attack of Zion by the machines, Zion being the refuge for human beings. Those are the two very strong thrusts of the films, if you like. Smith has become liberated and is in some way pretty much the same character, except that his ego is expanded, and he is in the process of replicating himself. I think the idea was to move forward. There was a 20-minute compilation that we saw about halfway through the shoot of what we'd shot, and it was quite astounding what was put together. I think in terms of breaking new ground, technically certainly, it's moving ahead. The [Wachowski brothers, who wrote and directed the movies,] always thought, 'This is what we want. We can't achieve it. It's impossible to achieve it at this stage, so let's invent something so that we can achieve it.'"

There are worse jobs in life than coming up with an outfit for Carrie-Anne Moss. Dana Schneider has that assignment. "All the Gucci goth stuff is not that Victorian sit-in-the-back-row-of-the-opera sort of thing," she says. "It's about very empowered females, and that's what I'm seeing with the movies I've been working on." She describes Carrie Ann Moss in the Matrix films as representative of a new breed of strong yet feminine women who fight for good while wearing the kind of black clothing traditionally associated with evil.
She also says black has broken free of its origins, which she traces back to Queen Victoria's time, when the youthfully widowed queen wore mourning attire the remainder of her life, causing court ladies and the public to follow suit.

The Matrix Online has a new report on the "Virus Twins" and the next generation of bullet time effects used on the movie.
The car chase will have multiple agents in a highway pursuit of Trinity and Morpheus, leaping out of cars as they're blown apart, driven into other speeding vehicles. The chase will employ a now mobile bullet time technique allowing the camera to circle the chase, swinging low and spirallling through exploding car and window doors

The Matrix Online got some great new shots from the set this week. The shots involved were for a flight sequence that is said to be groundbreaking.

Over at The Matrix Online, they got an interesting report on some of the effects that would be seen in the movie. Be warned though, this is spoiler material so you might want to move on to the next story if you don't want to be spoiled.
I spoke to one of the special FX guys... he told me some stuff about the sequels:
He said that in the sequels, we will learn more about the "whole story" of the Matrix. Then, he just started talking about random parts of the movie.
He told me that there are a lot more agents, and that they can multiply. I asked him if it was true that Neo would fight 100 Agent Smith's. He said that scene was really cool, and was referred to as the "Burly Brawl" back at the studios (because of the "Burly Man" fake title). I know there was a lot of confusion as to whether Neo would fight 100 Agent Smith's or 100 copies of himself, but he confirmed that Neo would fight 100 Agent Smith's. He also mentioned that Neo and Agent Smith have a cool fight on top of a bus.

Film Jerk reports that production won't be severely hampered by Aaliyah's death.
The recent death of singer/actress Aaliyah will not slow the production down terribly, as her primary scenes have not been shot yet. The part will be recast (duh) and candidates being discussed include Stacey Dash (TV's 'Clueless', who is much, much, much older than she looks) and Brandy Norwood (TV's 'Moesha', and a hip-hop star like Aaliyah). Unknowns will also be considered for the part.

It appears that The Matrix Reloaded will be released in May 2003 according to Variety. A week ago producer Joel Silver announced that the movie wouldn't make it's Winter 2002 release and was being pushed back. Now Warner Bros. distribution president Dan Fellman said, "We never have had it scheduled." He goes on to say, "We are right on schedule with the film." The film will be released simultaneously in the US and abroad.

It looks like The Matrix Reloaded will be pushed back to a Summer 2003 release. Producer Joel Silver spoke to Sci Fi Wire about the project, "It's going to be summer now, summer 2003."
The reasoning is not due to lack of faith in the movie but rather an attempt to give it and The Matrix 3 to be finished with sufficient time. "It's just it's an enormous project," Silver said. "It's a staggering project. There's so much dealing with it, it's unbelievable, and they just need time to finish both movies, because we're shooting them as one big movie. It's not back-to-back. It's one movie, so they'll finish shooting it, and then they'll take the time to finish the movies."

Say this much for producer Joel Silver, he likes his violence in movies. He has no interest in softening the Matrix sequels for Warner Bros. to make a more kid friendly picture. "There's greater freedom in an R-rated picture for doing the kind of movies we like to do," said Silver in an interview with Empire Online. "These pictures are not for children," Silver went on to say. "The Matrix sequels are both R-rated and that's just the way that worked out... I'm proud that we do not make these pictures for children. These films are R-rated for a reason."

Shooting is taking place in Oakland this week. They appear to be mostly filming car chases at the moment that involve Fishburne and Moss. The Matrix Online posted a set report and some photos from the Alameda Times showing the scene being filmed.
It appears that filming will resume in October in Australia. Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving will be among those on the set. From Warner Bros. press release:
After completing preliminary photography in California, the production will be based at the Fox Studios in Sydney. “The Matrix” sequels will film on location in Sydney with the support and assistance of the Federal Government, the State Government of New South Wales, N.S.W. State Premier Bob Carr, and the Office of State and Regional Development.

Manex Entertainment looks to have been left out in the rain for the sequels. Despite winning an Oscar for their special effects work on The Matrix, poor financial stability has led the producers of the sequels to pass on signing the company up for the $30 million in effects work needed for the sequels.
ESC Entertainment will be taking over instead. The new company has been founded largely by defectors from Manex. It also continues to hire away digital artists from the struggling effects firm. Warner Bros. denies being an owner of ESC or of having any interest in getting involved in the effects business.

Hugo Weaving spoke to the NY Post about the project. He said that every copy of the script is printed on paper that cannot be photocopied and has the cast or crew member's named splashed across the middle to make it easy to trace.
Even though filming starts in less than a month, "even actors who've signed on haven't got their scripts yet," Weaving says. "They know they're playing such-and-such a role, but they don't know anything about it! I guess with a lot of money at stake, it's fair enough, but I also think it's a little bit over-the-top."
He has spent four months of daily training with fight choreographer Woo-Ping Yuen along side co-stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne. He's looking forward to reprising the role. "It's so much fun to play a villain with a sense of humor," he says.
Asked about the plot he clammed up. "The brothers [‘Matrix' directors Larry and Andy Wachowski] would be very, very, very angry," he says. Look, the plot develops in a really fantastic, really interesting way. But I honestly can't tell you anything more than that."

Want to be in the sequels? Here's your chance. Follow this link for information on just what sort of extras are being sought. Among their needs are a photo double for Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), excellent drivers and athletic people willing to wear skimpy futuristic clothing. Some intensive stunt work will be going in the shooting involving the drivers.

It is not a good day to be a star working on these sequels. According to The Matrix Online, Carrie-Anne Moss injured her knee during shooting. "I injured the knee working out for the Matrix shoot. It promises to be an even more strenuous shoot than the original because we're filming Matrix 2 and Matrix 3 back to back," says Moss.
As if that wasn't bad enough, Keanu Reeves has also apparently been injured. Apparently he broke his ankle during training for filming. Movie Headlines found a story on the Swedish paper Aftonbladet that includes a picture of Reeves limping along with his groceries with his left foot in a cast. What this means to the shooting schedule for these movies is anyone's guess right now.

Confirmation on Jet Li's casting has seemingly been delayed forever. Now comes word that he may have lost the role entirely. This would be awful news if it weren't for the name mentioned to fill that role. According to Variety, Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) is being aggressively courted to star in the sequels. Apparently the reason Li has leaped at the role is the low offered salary. Special effects and contracts for the returning stars have eaten up much of the budget leaving little for Li.
Meanwhile, Keanu Reeves talked to Sci-Fi Wire about the action in the sequels. He confirmed that he is undergoing kung fu training to prepare. As for the action, Reeves says "Instead of one-on-one fights, there's multi-fights. And weapons: there's some more weapons. And the ambition of what Larry and Andy Wachowski--the directors--want to do and where they want to put the camera and the environments they want to shoot ... are insane."

Jada Pinkett Smith (Scream 2) is in negotiations to join the cast of the two sequels. She would be playing the rumored character Niobi, a love interest to Morpheus, played by Laurence Fishburne. Production is currently scheduled to begin in March 2001.

The Matrix sequels will be filmed in Australia as planned all along. Rumors had popped up that other locations would be used but producer Joel Silver put them to rest in an interview with Empire Magazine. When asked why possible plans to shoot in Britain had been dropped, he responds "We talked about possibly shooting in the UK, like we talked about shooting in Germany or Rome. But looking at all the different places, it was strictly a financial decision. It's all based on the economics. As we did the first shoot in Sydney and there were economic benefits to doing such, we decided to shoot the others there, too."

Fight coordinator Wu Ping is not satisfied with the spectacular fights he choreographed for The Matrix. He has been brought back to choreograph the sequels with directors Larry and Andy Wachowski demanding even more spectacular action.
Ping is reportedly already auditioning fighters to be doubles and actors for the sequels. According to Anthony Jones, a British stunt agent, "Wu Ping is looking for a really crack team of fighters. He's out to make the most compulsive fight scenes at the movies, and that's before the special effects."

Carrie Anne Moss talked to the Chicago Sun-Times about the movies. According to the actress, filming will take place in Chicago, San Francisco and Australia. She says that the two sequels, being shot back to back, will require two years of her time. Below is a piece of the article, hit the link above for the whole story.
"I read the first sequel script a month ago and I was blown away," she says.
In fact, Moss takes these "Matrix" movies so seriously that she was even notoriously picky about how she would read the new scripts. "I picked my time. I didn't want to read it flying. I wanted to give the new movies my complete energy. So I waited until I was done with shooting. I curled up in my bed and read it."
Moss has admitted that she didn't "completely get" the first script when she originally read it. "This one I got right away. Of course, I have to go back and get all the little things. But I'm in no hurry to read it again. I want to let it simmer for a little while, which is my process. I know how to save it a little bit. To let it happen."
Next month when "Matrix" training begins, Moss' life will be about the inevitable aches and pains that go along with these Matrix flicks. "I think my training will be different this time because for the first movie, I had never done work on wires before," she says. Moss was put through the paces by Hong Kong martial arts mavens, gymnastics gurus and stunt experts.
They would string her up on tiny wires in padded rooms to simulate those scenes where she was literally flying through the air.
"I was so scared. I cried all the time," Moss admits. "But that's what the Matrix is about. It's a movie about experiencing your fears. So filming it was a heavy experience for me because I lived the theme of the movie. I faced my own anxieties."
Moss says she is "constantly amazed at the response to the original movie. I guess we can all identify with a movie that has a deeper meaning."

It was recently rumored on Ain't It Cool News that a new character was being added to The Matrix's happy universe. IGN just confirmed that rumor. The character will be called Niobe and will be dating the leader of the fabled city Zion. She's also captain of the fastest ship in the human fleet. Of interesting not is that Niobe was apparently once romantically involved with Morpheus. Also being added is a teenage boy to the cast of major roles.
Shooting is currently scheduled to begin in March 2001.

Keanu Reeves spoke to USA Today about The Matrix 2. The script for it has recently been completed and he's had a chance to sit down and read it. Reeves seemed pretty pleased, saying "It's fantastic. It has even more ambitions than the first one. My character is more developed."
It should be a much more physically demanding role for him than the first though. "There are a lot of physical demands in it. It's more sophisticated in the action sequences and fight sequences." Woah. That's pretty impressive. Reeves will begin training for the role in November.
The Wachowski brothers are now looking at the possibility of using digital cameras for the film. This is because they are "trying to achieve certain camera perspectives," Reeves says.
When asked about the appeal of The Matrix, Reeves says the movies aim to "synthesize the action spectacle and give it an emotional context." He goes on to say that "I never thought of it as an action picture. I always thought of it as a drama."

I hope you aren't holding your breath waiting for these sequels. You could be in for a long wait. The scripts are not done yet meaning that production can't get started. Producer Andrew Mason told Sydney's Morning Herald, "There's some preliminary planning going on. But without the scripts, no-one can really lock anything in. So everybody's lining up every option and holding their breath." He went on to say that filming wouldn't begin until the middle of 2001 at the earliest due to the time needed for preproduction.
While he was at it, Mason mentioned that it was highly likely that the movie would film in Sydney just like the original. Other locations were being scouted in Canada and Britain in case they can't book studio time when they're ready.

Rumors have been flying about for quite awhile now that Jet Li might play some part in the Matrix sequels. Now we know for sure. FilmForce is reporting that Li has been cast in the movie. What part he will play is still unknown.
This is clearly a good match as The Matrix was obviously inspired by Li's movies. So adding him to the sequels seems like a perfect match.

5 April, 2000
It was suggested as a rumor a few weeks ago but now there may be some truth to it. Jet Li is actually considering joining the cast of The Matrix 2 and The Matrix 3. Directors Andy and Larry Wachowski are very interested in having him take part. No negotiations are under way yet. However it should be fairly easy to pull it together. Joel Silver, produced The Matrix and is behind Jet Li's first two American films, Lethal Weapon 4 and Romeo Must Die.
Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss, Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving are all locked up for the sequels. That means the biggest obstacle is finding the space in the budget for him.
7 March, 2000
When you watch The Matrix you can't help but think of Jet Li (assuming you are familiar with him). So it comes as no surprise that the Wachowski brothers considered him a big influence on their movie. So what are the chances that he could end up in one or both of the sequels? He recently finished working on Romeo Must Die, a modern telling of Romeo and Juliet. That was produced by Joel Silver who also produced The Matrix. Seeing the connection?
While that matchup is pure speculation, the two confirm that they are considering a new project called The First King. It would be a present day story that relates to first century China. Further details could not be pried out of them.
1 November, 1999
There will be two sequels to The Matrix and the main characters will return. Joel Silver spoke to Science Fiction Weekly and had some details to share about the back to back production of the two films. As to the subject of actors, he said "Carrie-Anne will be in it. Her deal's not done yet. But Keanu's deal is done, and Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus). And it's all coming together." He said that we will get to see the human city of Zion and more of what Neo can do. "It's a unique situation where...the story does continue. Other sequels I've been involved in, we've had to sit down and figure out a story. But in this movie, the story is continuing. Essentially, (the Wachowskis) intended to make Matrix because they wanted to find a way to make a superhero movie today where the audience would accept superheroes in a way that wouldn't feel to them like Saturday morning television. And they made the first movie to set up that world. In the sequels, you're going to see that Neo has superhuman powers, and they can really do what they've always wanted to do"
4 October, 1999
The Wachowski brothers haven't written the scripts for the Matrix 2 & 3, to be filmed back to back, but they have apparently worked out some action scenes already just to get the suits at Warner Bros. salivating. It seems that one of those scenes is a car chase but not just any car chase. In this one Neo is being pursued by Agents. But if you remember the footrace at the end of The Matrix, you know that agents can jump from one person's body to another, which is exactily what they do in this scene. They jump from driver to driver to stay hot on Neo's trail. The scene will be making extensive use of the "bullet time" effects put to such stunning use in the original. Mannex Entertainment, which created those effects is back again to work on the sequels. They actually intend to make them even better this time around. Pretty cool, eh?
