The Long Green Shore (2002)

Plot:  Toward the end of World War II an Australian brigade is ordered to New Guinea to force out the retreating Japanese forces.

News:

8 August, 2001

Russell Crowe will be making his own film. He will write, produce, direct and star in The Long Green Shore, a World War II story that gives an account of Australia's role in the war. Crowe is currently touring with his band Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts and will begin work on the script next month at the end of the tour. The current script is by Bob Ellis, based on the novel by the late John Hepworth.

Production is currently scheduled to begin next spring in the South Pacific. The story takes place after Germany has been defeated. Japan is on its heels and an Australian brigade has been ordered to New Guinea to force out the retreating Japanese. The book looks at the moral dilemmas of fighting for purely political reasons rather than functional ones.

Crowe will produce the film with Mark Johnson for Intermedia. At this point it isn't known what role Crowe would take in this ensemble cast.
