Over at FilmForce, Stax has gotten a hold of John Logan's script for The Last Samurai for review. It's a positive review with some spoilers.
The Last Samurai is the best script I've read in months. It's a captivating work of historical fiction that allows Westerners a peek inside a foreign world and provides an opportunity to learn about the samurai, a group often portrayed onscreen but seldom understood. What I enjoyed most was the story's (rather overt) parallels to contemporary issues as it recounts America's first foray into Southeast Asian affairs. Allusions to World War II, America's involvement in Vietnam, and the influx of Japanese businesses into the U.S. during the 1980s and 1990s are clearly evident in this draft.

Akaroa, New Zealand is being considered as a location for filming of this project. North Island will the location for the bulk of the shooting but a particular seaside location is needed and that puts this town in the running. Mayor Bob Parker has met with the producers and believes they have a good shot to attract them to the Banks Peninsula town.

According to Variety, Tom Cruise is close to a deal to star in The Last Samurai. The movie, set in the 19th century, would tell the tale of an American soldier hired by the Emperor of Japan to teach western military tactics to his army. This puts him in place to witness the death of an era.
