The search for a writer for this long awaited sequel may be reaching an end. Apparently Lucas and Spielberg are now focusing on Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) to write the script. Darabont is familiar with the Indy character, having written for the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles TV series.

Amazingly after an incredibly long wait, it appears that this movie is a go. Fox News reported that the movie is going to be made. In a conversation with Spielberg, Harrison Ford and Kate Capshaw after the Golden Globes, it was asked if the film would be made. All three said yes, indicating it would be made after Spielberg finishes Catch Me If You Can with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.

"We have a title, but we're not ready to announce it," Spielberg said. "I will give you one clue, though. Kate is in it." When asked if he meant that Capshaw's character would appear via flashbacks he replied: "No. She'll be in the present."

Ford said he's ready to do the fourth film. "It was always about getting the right script, and now we have it," he said.

According to the New York Post, a spokesman for Paramount Pictures informed them that the studio has "given the green light to look at scripts."

The report goes on to say that the studio is already holding meetings on the project. "Paramount had meetings last week about the movie," says the paper's unidentified source. "They want the original credits - George Lucas producing, Steven Spielberg directing and Harrison Ford to star." The mystery person adds that this will be tough to pull together. "Harrison wants at least $25 million plus some of the back end and George and Steven have said they will work for a lesser fee than usual, but want a big portion of the movie's proceeds. The entire movie is going to cost them $150 million and Paramount can't figure out how it's going to make any money with all three of the big names demanding money off the back end."

The script has long been one of the projects major sticking points. "They already have three scripts that they think are acceptable, but now George and Steven say they want to have writing control," says the Post's source. Paramount wouldn't address that comment saying only "There is no budget yet because there is no script. Harrison Ford will most likely get $25 million because that is what he is getting for some of his other movies."

In an interview with the New York Times, screenwriter Stephan Gaghan (Traffic) revealed that he had been asked if he was interested in writing the script for the fourth Indiana Jones movie. This would seem to indicate that Shyamalan won't be writing the script.

Last week it was reported that M. Night Shyamalan was being considered to write the script for the fourth Indiana Jones movie for Spielberg, Lucas and Ford. The enterprising folks over at Movie Headlines called up LucasFilm to find to try and confirm the story. They were told that Shyamalan is being considered. However he is not the only writer up for the job and has not signed a deal for it yet. They did confirm that the movie is actively being worked on and that Spielberg, Lucas and Ford are looking forward to it.

I've generally tried to avoid rumors about this project. They just never seem to go anywhere. This one seems to have a bit of weight to it though. Back in 1993, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford agreed to make a fourth Indy film if they could agree on a script and schedule. So far that has not happened.

Now things have taken an interesting turn. M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) has been approached to write the script. Trying to get such a high profile writer involved in the project seems to indicate that they are finally serious about making the movie. If all went smoothly the production could go before cameras in 2002.

Thanks to Variety.

This may be the most highly anticipated and highly postponed movie of all time. That doesn't mean it isn't happening though. Talking to the New York Post, Harrison Ford confirmed that a third sequel is in the works. They suggested that scheduling problems with him, Spielberg and Lucas could mean the movie won't start production until 2004. "Well, I don't know about that date, but yeah, OK, I accept the math," Ford says, cracking a rare smile. "And how old would that make Sean Connery if he agrees to play my father?" Ford himself would be 62 and Connery would be 74.

Ford acknowledges that his age would probably have to be mentioned in the movie. "I think it would be fun to address," he says. "The issue is really whether the character can age; whether the character's virtues are based on his youth, or on some other aspects of human nature which continue to be interesting to the audience - his wisdom, his intelligence, his indomitability or other skills that might be more appropriate than pure animal magnetism. I don't know that being a sex symbol is exactly the requirement for playing Indiana Jones."

That doesn't mean he thinks age is an obstacle to such a movie though. "It just depends on what the action hero's obstacles are," he says. "There are racing-car drivers in their 70s, including Paul Newman. There are guys I wouldn't want to come up against in an alley who are in their early 70s, like Clint Eastwood. I don't think it's really a question of chronological age as much as it is vitality."
