Harry Knowles of AICN is claiming to have landed the first advance screening of the film. Apparently someone showed him a videotape of the roughcut in a hotel during his book tour. While this seems dubious, he does have a long and gushing review up on his site.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the next Episode II trailer will premiere in the oddest of places, on Fox television. Fox will air the trailer just before 9 p.m. EST between slightly abbreviated episodes of Malcolm in the Middle and The X-Files. It will also appear later in front of Fox's animated film Ice Age. The tone of this trailer will be markedly different from previous ones. No attention will be given to the love story. LucasFilm marketing VP Jim Ward says "You'll see one-on-one in lightsaber duels, of course, but you'll also see, on a huge scale, hundreds of Jedi in action. This is kind of like the WWF of Jedi fighting."
Elsewhere, over at AICN, Moriarty has posted a review of the movie's script. He gushes over this script.
The script literally opens with a bang, and it rarely pauses for breath between there and the final chilling image. The biggest two improvements in this chapter of the prequel trilogy are the tone and the dialogue. The addition of Jonathan Hale as a co-screenwriter seems to have made a major difference in the overall energy of the script. There's a breathless quality to it, and in many places, it feels like Lucas and Hale are offering sly responses to fanboy responses to EPISODE I, particularly when introducing Jar Jar or when dealing with "whiny" Anakin. For all of you who believe that Lucas operates in a money-insulated bubble, never listening to anything the fans say, EPISODE II should serve as a solid, resounding refutation of that idea. This is a script that seems almost overeager to please, packed full of action sequences and interesting supporting characters, cutting back and forth between several genuinely interesting storylines at once.
You can read the entire review here.

Hayden Christensen talked to Empire Online for their April issue. Asked about the dealing with the future of Anakin without a script for Episode III, he responds "Yeah, because of the fact that I'm more or less creating a character arc over the course of these two films, the second of which I really have no idea about, which makes it difficult at times. Obviously you try to incorporate certain sensibilities that justify where I am now and what's to follow, to justify becoming Darth Vader. So a lot of it was a collaborative process with George. He doesn't want to say, 'here's the script, take what you want and go do it.' It's not that at all. He definitely says, 'Maybe you want to do this scene a little bit more like this, because in the next one we're just going to add this into this."
He is looking forward to the next film though. "Oh yeah, that's where the fun is. That's where you get to play, where you get to be imaginative with what you're exploring. It's easier in a lot of ways to play something more aggressive, more in tune with the dark side."
Fans anxious for some new images should check out the magazine, hitting stands tommorrow. It contains some amazing new images from the film, including a staggering shot of clone trooper batallions being marched in formation, Obi Wan facing off against Jango Fett and a glimpse of the youthful Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.

Ewan McGregor apparently got a look at quite a bit of footage when he was at the Ranch recently to loop some of his lines. He told Empire Online what he thought. "Star Wars 2 is looking really, really good," he enthused. "I saw a lot of my stuff while we were doing the looping and it looks really full-on. The title's not a good title but there we are. He keeps that completely to himself George. No one ever knows what it's going to be called and then one day it's just announced and he doesn't let anybody know. When I initially heard about it I was doing a press line up in America and somebody went, 'What do you think of Attack of The Clones' and I said 'I didn't see it.' So they said 'No, what do you think of that?' And they hadn't even fucking told me, you know? So I said 'I think it sounds terrible, because it does sound like a sort of 40s… It sounds like Flash Gordon in A-t-t-a-c-k O-f T-h-e C-l-o-n-e-s. But I suppose in a way it is a kind of serialised Science Fiction thing so maybe that's just the way it should be."

According to the official site, there is some confusion to clear up in bloodlines. Owen Lars is not Obi-Wan Kenobi's brother, as has long been believed. Spin-off materials published since 1983 had stated the relationship but this was based on other material that was discarded in making the movies. The official word: "Owen Lars is the son of Cliegg Lars. Obi-Wan's parents are unknown, and he has little to no connection to them having grown up in the Jedi Temple. He is aware of having a brother, but very little information about that sibling has ever been published."

A review of the script has popped up at Dark Horizons. It's filled to the brim with spoilers so don't go looking unless you really, really want to know. The review is very positive. Here's a little taste:
... the action set pieces are going to be as awesome as ever. There is the aforementioned assassination attempts and the chase sequence, three duels, two aerial battles, one massive land battle, three massive monsters – you name it this film has it. This is definetely the most action packed of all the Star Wars films yet. And don’t even get me started on the clones. When they eventually attack, this film is going to look so amazing that any other name except for Attack of the Clones will seem utterly inappropriate...

George Lucas and Hayden Christensen spoke to the LA Times about the film. "The issue ... becomes, what is it in Anakin's personality that makes him turn bad?" Lucas told the newspaper. "What is his flaw? He has a couple. The groundwork is put forward in this movie much more clearly."
He continues, "What brought me back to finish the whole thing off was the question of why, and how, Darth Vader became evil. The whole reason for going back and doing the backstory on Star Wars is that there is an evolution from this very good person, very kind person, very loving person, into something that one would describe as evil."
Christensen spoke about Anakin's choice between love and duty. "Like Anakin, we all have to make choices, following instinct, reasoning and our heart," Christensen told the newspaper. "We're continually being presented with influences, sometimes very opposing ones, that motivate us and affect our decisions. Hopefully we choose wisely."

YES!!!!! THERE IS A GOD!!!!! It looks like all the complaints from "Star Wars" fans (me included) have paid off, *NSYNC will NOT be seen in "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones".Band member Joey Fatone called into the Carson Radio Show (99.3 FLZ) with word that the group had been cut from the film, saying "I'm going to make it officially known they dropped it because people made a big deal about it...we stopped by the set and it was like a little small thing and we're not going to be in it, and I'm not going to comment on it anymore."
I'm now off to do my happy dance.

Arena Magazine got Ewan McGregor to do some talking about the movie. "Episode 1 had to do a lot of work to set up all the political stuff with the Senate - and with a children's movie you have to be careful with all that stuff. This time there's more of a spirit of the first three. It's definitely hotting up."
Basically that means it less serious and more fun. "There was a big sigh of relief that we were able to get a lot more humour into it," Ewan says, "Although I don't know about the Jedi mullet."

Holy bad rumors, Batman! Could it be true? Could the members of the band NSYNC be appearing in the movie? According to MTV News, that is in fact the case. A spokesperson for the band confirmed it, say that the guys will be seen for a fleeting moment in a "big scene with lots of extras." It's unknown which members are in the movie. The appearance apparently occured because the band approached producer Rick McCallum hoping to get some bit roles.
In other news, a ton of promo shots have appeared online if you know where to look.
3 January, 2002
Producer Rick McCallum talked to Empire Online about what he expects to be the hot toy next Christmas, a Jango Fett action figure. "He is the ultimate accessory dude," McCallum told Empire. "Forget all the bullshit that we have today - colour mobile phones - this dude knows how to party. He comes to it with everything."
"He's my favourite," enthuses McCallum, "he's my dream - to have the ability to walk into a studio meeting with that gear on, and say, 'Dude, I've got an idea.' If one of those young punk studio execs starts with, 'Well, Rick…', BOOM! I would just open up… I can't tell you what I would open up, but it would be brilliant."

Christopher Lee talked to Empire Online about working on the movie. He actually enjoyed all the work in front of blue screens. "That is where an actor's powers of imagination are tested," he said. "If you have a strong imagination and are inventive, you can do it."
Pressed to pick a favorite director out of those he has worked with recently (Lucas, Peter Jackson, Tim Burton), Lee favored Lucas. "They all have this quality of genius, it simply takes a different shape .... the easiest one, the most laidback is George Lucas because he is very quiet and very easy to work with."
'Baldric' checked in again with a quick report.
The Official Star Wars website tells us to set our VCR's to MTV on November 27 at 10:30 p.m. (ET/PT) for "MTV's Movie House". The show previews "Attack of the Clones" and will talk with stars Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen.
Unfortunately we won't be seeing it in South Africa for a while :(

The first poster will be appearing in theaters soon but for the moment here is a small image of it. The quality is pretty poor but you can see Anakin and Amidala (with suspiciously Leia-like hair) standing back to back. I believe the text says "A Jedi shall not know anger. Nor hatred. Nor love."

LucasFilm has confirmed that a second trailer will be available exclusively on the internet for owners of the Episode I DVD. This will require those owners to have a DVD-ROM drive in their computer to access it. That trailer will be available tommorrow November 9.
They also confirm that a third trailer will appear in front of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. That trailer is over two minutes long and features all new footage.

Did you catch the trailer in front of Monsters, Inc.? Well then you're probably like me and want to slow that sucker down so it can be appreciated. Your chance is here. QuickTime versions of the trailer are now online.

If the latest report from TheForce.net is to be believed, and we think it is, then get ready for an avalanche of Episode II trailers next month. Up first will be the teaser trailer which will appear in front of Monsters Inc. on November 2. That will be followed by a longer trailer straight from the official website. Fans who snapped up the Episode I DVD will find it first and everyone else should be able to access it a bit later. That one will appear on November 9. Finally, a long version of the trailer will appear in front of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone when it is released November 16.

Reports on Cinema Confidential and TheForce.net point to Monsters Inc. as the film that will play host to the first trailer. The date for that is November 2, 2001. While these reports seem fairly sure of their accuracy, I would caution some skepticism. Remember that prior to the appearance of the first trailer for The Phantom Menace, there were considerable numbers of inaccurate predictions as to when that trailer would appear.

TheForce.net has a fascinating report from someone who has had a look at some footage from the film. Specifically the footage involves the long rumored Yoda fight scene. Very interesting stuff but it contains major league spoilers so be prepared.
