Ewan McGregor has agreed to star in Neil Jordan's historical drama Borgia. The movie tracks the corrupt 16th century Borgia family. Roderigo Borgia, the father of the family, eventually became Pope Alexander VI, running the Vatican as a criminal operation. McGregor will play Cesare, the son and a hypocritical priest.

Background:

The Borgias were a startling family. Included in the family were eleven cardinals and three popes of the Roman Catholic Church, queen of England and a saint. The movie focuses on three of them, the most infamous: Rodrigo Borgia and two of his seven children, Cesare and Lucretia. Rodrigo became Pope Alexander VI, basically buying his way into the position with bribes. He would quickly elevate Cesare to the position of cardinal and then arrange a trio of marriages (with bad endings) for Lucretia to forge alliances and amass wealth. He was fond of orgies and murdering his rivals. Next to Ceare though, he was mild.

Cesare would spend a lifetime enriching himself at the expense of others. He discarded his post as cardinal when it no longer suited him. He was rumored to have killed his own brother. He was brutal general for a time. He spent a good time in Rome, organizing orgies and callously killing anyone who spoke ill of him. Most notably he is supposedly the inspiration for Machiavelli's infamous book The Prince.

Lucretia went through husbands like most people change their socks. She was engaged twice by the age of eleven. Her first husband was discarded as boring and political maneuvering anulled the marriage on a charge of impotency. After that she retired to a covenant where she became pregnant, and then had a Vatican ritual declare her a virgin. Her brother would soon after murder the father of the child. It would be long rumored that the child was actually from an incestous affair with either her father or brother. Her second husband was murdered only a couple years after they were married. Her father would later leave her in charge of the papacy at the age of 21 while he travelled.
