Director Rod Lurie has come on board to direct the romantic comedy Beat the Eagle. The story centers on a well loved two term US President who retires to a small town on the East Coast. He means to write his memoirs but finds himself roped into running for mayor by the locals. He is challenged by the owner of the local hardware store, turning the election into a massive battle.
Lurie is at his best dealing with political drama. His first two films, Deterrence and The Contender showed he had a deft hand for the material. The former journalist and movie critic most recently worked on The Last Castle with Robert Redford. "It's so funny, commercial and high-quality that I was surprised they offered to me," Lurie told Daily Variety. "It's a big gift. It's a way of staying involved in a world that I love, but in a different genre."
The script is getting a polishing before going out to actors. It is by Tom Schulman (Dead Poets Society).
