Batman Beyond (?)

Plot:  Set in the future, Bruce Wayne has retired as Batman and turned the job over to high school student Terry McGinnis.

News:

12 October, 2001

According to a big report on Coming Soon! concerning the status of Batman at Warner Bros., this project is dead and buried. According to that report, the studio felt that the futuristic backgrounds the movie would require made the film prohibitively expensive.

Reportedly Paul Dini spoke at the Wizard World Con in Chicago, where he announced that he and Alan Burnett had completed their script for the movie. That's the good news. The bad news is that the project is "on hold" for the time being. Warner Bros. is not currently pursuing any further development on the project at this time. There has been no casting at this time so all rumors should be considered false.

Warner Bros. has been stuck on what to do with Batman ever since the horrible crash and burn of the last picture Batman and Robin. That hasn't really changed. They have however decided to take a stab at bringing their popular animated series Batman Beyond to the big screen in a live action format.

Hired to guide that project to fruition is director Boaz Yakin (Remember the Titans). He will be writing the script as well, with help from Batman Beyond creaters Paul Dini and Alan Burnett. The trio will be aided by novelist Neal Stephenson, acting as a consultant on some creative aspects.

Batman Beyond is an offshoot of the Batman series. It is set forty years in the future and Bruce Wayne has given up being Batman. That job has been handed down to young high schooler Tim McGinnis. Like Wayne, his parents were killed by criminals, provoking a desire for revenge. Wayne has spent years developing newer more powerful "toys" for the new Batman to use in his war on crime.

This movie is not intended to carry the Batman banner alone for Warner Bros. The studio still intends to continue the existing series although the direction is still very much up in the air.

Thanks to Variety.
