Dungeons & Dragons

News from June/July 1999

23 July, 1999

Tom Baker, best known for his playing the Doctor on Doctor Who, has been added to the cast of the movie. Baker will play the part of an elf named Hallvarth and will be in Prague in the first week of August for shooting. He had been rumored for the part of Gandalf in Lord of the Rings, which went to Ian McKellen instead. So I'm sure this will make a very satisfying fall back part for him. It is in the same genre. Oh, dear....

Thanks to SFX.

Yes we have more on this movie. The Prague Post printed a large article about the filming of the movie, with a few pictures taken on set. Points of interest are that the movie will start with a computer generated one minute fly over of the city of Sumdall, over 2000 extras have been cast in the movie, Jeremy Irons plays the evil villain Profion, the production saved about $3 million by filming in the Czech Republic, and a scene will show a council of mages preciding over locals. For the full article go here.

Thanks to Dan for sending it in.

In an update from yesterday's story, I've gotten a translation of the text attached to the picture. The article came from the largest tabloid in the country, Blesk (Lightning). The text says:

SHOOTING A FAIRY TALE AT RABI CASTLE

RABI - Actor Bruce Payne is at Rabi Castle in the process of the filming of a scene from the American fairy tale with the working title of Dungeons and Dragons. The fairy tale film, which is going to feature special digital effects and camera tricks is being filmed in the Czech Republic. In addition to Rabi Castle other locations will be Lipnice nad Sazavou, the library at Strahov monastery, Kacina Castle, St Mikulas Cathedral in Prague as well as the monastery in Doksanech. One of the main parts in the film is played by English actor, Jeremy Irons.

So now we know several of the shooting locations for the film. A little digging turned up some images of the locations. From left to right below we have Rabi Castle, Lipnice nad Sazavou, Strahov Monastery, Strahov Monastery Library, Kacina Castle, and St. Mikulas Cathedral.

Nice suit. Is that Armani? This is the first picture from the set of the movie. Shooting is under way in Czechoslavakia right now. This image is from a local paper. I don't know what the text says, but I'd love to know. Can anybody out there translate it? It does give us our first glimpse of what the movie will look like. So far I would say it looks pretty unoriginal, but that's a bit unfair without any details as to what we're looking at, so in truth I'm reserving judgement.

In an interview with Rocky Radio, Richard O'Brien said that he had just completed script rewriting for the movie. An excerpt from the interview: "For instance, the hero says to my character 'but I thought we had a deal. What happened to honor amongst thieves?' My character is supposed to say 'honor is for fools, my friend.' Well, that's very... cliched swords-and-sworcery kind of dialog, isn't it? So I changed that 'round to where he says 'what about honor among thieves' and I say 'oh, what a romantic notion.'"

Harry over at AICN tossed a little casting rumor out today. The part of Elwood the Dwarf might go to Charlie Smith. The part of Norda, an elven tracker, might go to Kristen Wilson (Doctor Doolittle, Girl 6). Nothing definite, just a little rumor to chew on.

3 June, 1999

Zoe McLellan has been added to the cast in the lead female role. Presumably this would be the role of the sorceress. Marlon Wayans has also been signed to the movie, but no word as to the role he will play. The movie is currently filming in Prague.

Thanks to Variety.

Details are being crystalized for this movie. Executive producer is Joel Silver and the director is Courtney Solomon, who also co-wrote the script with Topper Lillien and Carroll Cartwright. Filming begins May 28 in Prague. Casting is being finalized. So far Justin Whalin (Serial Mom), Thora Birch (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger), and Kristen Wilson (Doctor Dolittle) have signed on. Solomon owns the rights to the movie but hasn't directed any movies. Douglas Milsome (Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket) should add some experience as cinematographer. Special effects are by George Gibbs' (Indiana Jones) Station X Studios.

Thanks to Variety and IMDB.
