Sony Pictures Classics Acquires Ingmar Bergman's Saraband for North America
New York, March 10, 2003 Sony Pictures Classics and Svensk Filmindustri today announced SPC¹s acquisition of North American and Australian rights to Saraband, directed by the legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman.
This family drama lays the foundation for two of Bergman's most well known actors to once again collaborate with him, Liv Ullmann ("Scenes From a Marriage", "Autumn Sonata", "Cries and Whispers") and Erland Josephson ("Scenes From a Marriage" and "Fanny and Alexander").
Ullmann plays a lawyer and ex-wife of Josephson, a retired professor, who after thirty-two years of separation decides to visit him at his summerhouse. While there she becomes embroiled in the dramatic tension between her ex-husband, his son from another marriage and his granddaughter, a beautiful and gifted young cellist. "Saraband" is a powerful contemporary drama about the struggle for power, liberation, and ultimately, reconciliation.
"The name Ingmar Bergman speaks volumes," said Michael Barker, Tom Bernard, Dylan Leiner and Marcie Bloom of Sony Pictures Classics in a joint statement. "To be involved with one of his works has been an unrealized passion for us since we began in this business. We look forward to serving him and his film and it also gives us great pleasure to be working again with Ann-Kristin Westerberg and Svensk."
"We are delighted to have concluded this deal with Sony Pictures Classics who has created a feeling of home for Ingmar Bergman's film Saraband," comments Ann-Kristin Westerberg. "The team at Sony Pictures Classics is one of the finest in nurturing these extraordinary films and bringing them to American audiences."
Ms. Westerberg negotiated the deal on behalf of Svensk Filmindustri.
