Greetings Scapers!
Ever aware of our insatiable need for all things Farscape, Sci Fi Channel re-ran some classic episodes last week to hold us over until the new ones start up again. "Look at the Princess" was Farscape's ambitious three-part story arc that first aired last summer. This was the first such trilogy that Farscape ever had, and it definitely raised the bar for all episodes to come. These three episodes are without a doubt, Farscape's greatest hour(s). Without further ado, part two of "Look at the Princess."
I Do, I Think - Season II - Original Air Date - 07.28.00
--Continuing from "A Kiss is But a Kiss"
Prince Clavor's assassins are about to kill Crichton. Suddenly, Jenavia - Clavor's fiancee - does her best Trinity impression and dispatches the assassins in swift fashion. As it turns out, Jenavia is a PeaceKeeper assassin herself. Her mission is to take out Clavor should he take power. She has decided that Crichton must also be a PK, and admires his dedication, noting that she would not agree to become a statue for 80 cycles. "Interesting coincidence", he says. "I was just having the same thought." After sensing that he is wavering, she leans in close. "Would you hesitate to kill me if I jeopardized the mission?"
This is the middle episode of the trilogy, and as such, has less exposition than the opener and much more action. The highlight of which takes place in space. Rygel has convinced the Empress that hiding Crichton is the best way to keep him alive until the ceremony, so she sends him up with some guards to a barge full of gifts in orbit, where no one would find him. Ro'Na - one of the guards, however, is working for...you guessed it - Scorpius. Once on the ship, however, Crichton takes full advantage of the fact Scorpius' henchmen would never dare kill him, so he begins fooling with the controls, turning on the ships' weapon systems. The planet's hyper-sensitive satellite system begins bombarding the ship, at which point Crichton realizes his only shot at survival is the cold, harsh vacuum of space. He grabs a fallen guard's pistol, exhales out as much air as possible, and throws himself out the airlock moments before the ship explodes. Using the pistol, he guides himself to the nearby transport pod, and once inside, collapses in visible agony.
Meanwhile, Zhaan continues to beg for Moya and Pilot's lives in the nebula with the Builders. It seems hopeless, however, and she begins to accept this tragic fate. Back on the planet, a machine is repairing the damage to Crichton's face from the vacuum. Without proof of wrongdoing, the Empress cannot send Scorpius away - it would be bad diplomatic policy. Aeryn comes to speak with John. She's glad to see that he has not given up, but she's wrong. After several attempts on his life in one day, he is resigned to marrying the Princess as it is his best shot at survival. "You can't just quit!" Aeryn shouts. "I'm not quitting," Crichton responds. "I just can't go on."
Moments before the wedding ceremony, Jenavia wished John good fortune, and Scorpius tells him he's making a mistake. John replies by saying "I had one request for a wedding present - that you be banned from the planet forever." Crichton and Katralla are married. Afterwards, it's a time for congratulations and good-byes. Crichton gives D'argo messages he recorded for Zhaan, Pilot and Aeryn. After Katralla undergoes the transformation to a statue, it is John's turn. Tyno warns him that the machine is calibrated for Sebaceans, and tells him to "endure the pain, and rule wisely."
As Crichton steps up to the platform, D'argo tells him that there's good new and bad news. Crichton asked for the bad first. "You are about to spend 80 cycles as a statue." "And the good?" "Chiana and I are having fantastic sex." The two begin to laugh, but John's laughter turns to a cry of pain as he becomes a modern day Han Solo in carbonite.
"I Do, I Think" shows off some of the shows best elements - humor, compelling characters, and tons of action. From Jenavia's kickboxing entrance to John's leap into outer space...well, it's hard to ask for more.
To be concluded....on to part III.
