Let me start off by saying that I am a Star Wars buff. I camped out for tickets to the Special Edition, Episode I, and I plan on doing it for Episode II. I'm just telling that as a warning in case my judgement is a bit bias. Anyways, here we go!

STAR WARS: EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE

Movie:   8/10

Many of you may be upset with me for giving this movie such a high score, but hear me out. This is the beginning, it's not going to be all fun and games. If you study plot structure, the story was in need of exposition, which is what it got. Granted, the plot was kinda weak as well as the acting (Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd come to mind), but hell, doesn't it give you the satisfaction knowing that Lloyd won't be back and we may be able to watch Jar Jar DIE? Anyways, enough rambling. I could write a college thesis on everything that was wrong with this flick (the midiclorians, why are we supposed to hate Maul, etc.), but I did enough college writing this weekend. It's time for a no brainer review. The movie starts off when two jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan MacGregor) and Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) are sent to negotiate with the corrupt trade corporation which is blockading the small, peaceful planet of Naboo. Things go awry and the two jedi find themselves on an Odyessy like quest from Naboo to Tatooine, Coruscant, and back to Naboo with Princess Amidala (the HOT Natalie Portman) and along the way they pick up Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) and an un-welcome menace, Darth Maul (who is the apprentice of the sith master Darth Sideous). I know that's a rough sketch, but who hasn't seen this flick? I mean I know people who haven't, but odds are if you're reading this, you have. I'm not going to write anymore than that. END OF STORY! I just hope Lucas does better this time around and leads us into the orginal trilogy in an awsome way.... Ohh yeah, the movie has a couple added minutes (mainly the Pod Race sequence).

Video:   10/10

I hear a lot of bitching about this video transfer (not to point fingers, however, IGN was unhappy that it was not a digital to digital transfer), I felt that it looked spectactular and didn't need a thing. It's widescreen (GOOD), it's THX (again GOOD) and it looks FUCKING GREAT (Fight Club GREAT). END OF STORY! Great reference material to show off the system.

Audio:   10/10

Again, this is a great transfer. THX, 5.1, what else needs to be said? It's Star Wars, of course it's going to be great!

Extras:   10/10

Loaded with a commentary with George Lucas and Co. (a bit technical, but at least it was on there), a wonderful, kick ass documentary worth repeated viewings, deleted scenes with finished special effect sequences, trailers, a music video, featurettes, etc. It's a great, jam packed disc. The only thing I wish for that wasn't included was an Episode II trailer, but this is far good enough! GREAT SHIT! WOO HOO! The force is certainly with this disc!

Overall:   10/10

One of the best discs I've seen so far this year, granted the movie was not that good when comparing it to the orginals, but it was better than a lot of shit to come out in 99. I LOVE STAR WARS!
