Continuing with this two week special on Kevin Smith DVD reviews in honor of Smith's new (and final "askewniverse") film, we take a look at the critically bashed Mallrats. While it was not Clerks (check out the reviews of Clerks and Clerks: Uncensored), it was an entertaining work of comedy and remains one of the best DVDs in my collection.

MALLRATS

Movie:   6/10

I love this film. The grade I've given that may not reflect it because it's not a great film, it's quite far from that, but it's also not a horrible film. Perhaps I have a new appreciation of the film do to this DVD release, which is one of my favorites in my collection. Again, this is not my favorite Kevin Smith movie, but it's entertaining none the less. The film deals with a pair of friends, Bodie and T.S., played by Jeremy London and Jason Lee, who both lose their girlfriends and decide to spend the day at the local mall. T.S. takes it upon himself to win his girlfriend back by trashing her father's game show with the help of Jay and Silent Bob. Brodie decides to help his friend while hoping to win back his lady. A basic plot with gross out humor intertwined. Entertaining and funny, Smith has made better. Probably because he learned from this mistake, which isn't horrible.

Video:   8/10

Sharp, anamorphic widescreen. The film looks great and this is clearly because of the DVD format. It's not Fight Club good, but it's still decent.

Audio:   8/10

Again, sharp and 5.1, it's hard to ask for more. This isn't an action movie, but it still sounds decent enough.

Extras:   10/10

Buy the disc for this feature alone. There is over an hour of deleted scenes, which are hilarious and also contain an explanation about why they were cut. My only complaint is that there is no chapter selection of the deleted scenes which makes it somewhat annoying. The other gem of this DVD is the commentary track which is one of my favorites to date. It was one of the first multi-angle commentaries and it's truely unique. It has information and a lot of humor and is worth a hundred listens. I love it, especially the Easter Bunny scene with Jay and Silent Bob. I also love the begin credit commentary. There is also a featurette, which is entertaining and worth a couple views. What else have we got, a hilarious music video with Jay and Silent Bob... A trailer... (Woop de doo.) I love the commentary and deleted scenes though.. This is a great DVD just for the entertaining film and great features.

Overall:   9/10

Buy it just for the extra features and the funny movie. It's kinda pricey so maybe you guys can join the Columbia House DVD Club and get Clerks/Mallrats/Chasing Amy/Dogma:SE for about fifteen bucks with a membership. It's worth it! I've been a member and the prices keep dropping and the free DVDs were worth it. Mention me if you join so I can reap the benefits!
