THE LIMEY

Movie:   8/10

The story revolved around British ex-con Wilson, played wonderfully by Terence Stamp. When Wilson is released from prison in the United Kingdom, he takes it upon himself to head to Los Angeles to investigate the "accidental" death of his daughter. The man Wilson holds responsible, Terry Valentine, again, played wonderfully by Peter Fonda, is a sleazy music producer with his hands in a few too many pies. However, Valentine is not an easy target and Wilson finds it hard to cut through Valentine's wealth and power to exact his revenge. It doesn't help that Valentine has a brass balled muscle, played by another 60's great, Barry Newman (Vanishing Point's Kowalski). Enlisting his daughter's former acting coach (Lesley Ann Warren) and a hilarious sidekick (Luiz Guzman), Wilson is a machine set on one thing: vengeance. The film is extremely well acted by all of the performers, the screenplay is tightly written by Lem Dobbs, and Soderbergh has a field day with flashbacks and other noir pieces. My one complaint is the pay off at the end, I don't know if it pisses me off or is satisfying, but I do love when Wilson gives that huge bodyguard a little toss. (The valet part is also hilarious.) Good film, decent noir, one of Soderbergh's best. (I have yet to see one movie I absolutely can't stand of his, but, then again I haven't seen The Underneath or Gray's Anatomy yet.)

Video:   8/10

Spotless anamorphic widescreen. How can you bitch about that?

Audio:   8/10

Very, very clean. 5.1, stereo, pick your poison. The gunshots do get a little loud in the shoot-out though.

Extras:   9/10

We have two great commentaries, one by Soderbergh and Dobbs and another with Stamp, Fonda, Warren, Newman, Dobbs, Soderbergh, and more. The later of the two also have pieces of 60's news put in with it. Very unique and entertaining. Dobbs and Soderbergh have a lot of fun on theirs too, I love Dobb's vulgarity and ruthlessness. Also included are trailers and TV spots (the usual), an isolated music score (love the car chase music), production notes, and bios. Very, very solid. Couldn't we have gotten a documentary though? (The docu-commentary isn't that bad though.)

Overall:   9/10

You can get the disc really cheap, it's a great flick and it's got a barrage of great actors. Sharp script and direction also. Soderbergh all the way baby!
