In honor of the new sequel, Jurassic Park III (honor of a sequel? that's a laugh) I've decided to do a DVD review of the first two Jurassic Park films, "Jurassic Park" and "Jurassic Park: The Lost World". Here we go....

JURASSIC PARK

Movie:   8.5/10

Please tell me you've seen this film. If you haven't you have problems. When "Jurassic Park" came out in 1994, it became one of the biggest blockbusters ever. It was an action movie WITH a plot. Something nowadays that doesn't exist (see Swordfish, Armageddon, and other eye candy films). It was actually a well adapted film from a previously published novel. However, it was not good enough for me. I read the book before the film came out (I think I was in 4th grade) and I totally wanted Hammond to die and that other guy who got killed by the juvenile T-Rex. The biggest blunder was the exclusion of the flying dinosaurs. The film was good though, it deals with a team of specialists who are brought in to evaluate the theme park named in the title which has become home to dinosaurs brought back by DNA samples. The dinosaurs break out and the shit hits the fan. End of story. Spielberg pulls another Jaws horror/thriller twenty years later that is still fresh.

Video:   8/10

I was not disappointed with this and thank God I wasn't. This is a sense driven film. Visuals and sounds are a requirement for such a film. It does have a few below excellent scenes, however, that keep it from a 9 or 10. Maybe Spielberg should have brought in his friend George Lucas to do a THX master. Besides, it's fun to watch the different THX logos they come up with.

Audio:   8/10

See the video column. I don't know if the DTS tracked DVD was better or not. However, I do not TOTALLY have 5.1, I have four speakers and no sub, so maybe it's my fault. THX may have helped, but they did Independence Day and some of the music became hideously too loud and drowned out the film on that DVD.

Extras:   7/10

This is a collector's edition and it's not BAD. However, I've seen better. We have a making of documentary which is very good, preproduction meetings, animatics, trailers, an encyclopedia, and biographies. That doesn't totally float my boat. Get off your ass Spielberg and do a fucking commentary and I'll be happy. All his DVDs are loaded with everything but. I was a tad disappointed. Where are the deleted scenes? I know there are some of those....

Overall:   8/10

Worth a buy for the extras given but mainly to see dinosaurs in the DVD format.

NOTE: Buy both films together in "The Collection", it's like thirty bucks and it's worth every penny. Even if you didn't like the second flick, the packaging is worth it.
