Stephen King's IT

Movie:  10/10

This was the first movie to ever scare me. I saw it when I was in like fourth grade or something and for years I had troubles walking to the bathroom alone at night, sleeping, etc. I always thought that under my bed or behind the shower curtain would be the one, the only, Tim Curry dressed as Stephen King's horrific clown, Pennywise. Granted, it's a made for TV movie and it could have been better, but for some reason, this film has always been close to my heart because it was my first "scary movie". In case you haven't read the book or seen the movie, IT deals with a group of seven kids (among them young Seth Green and Jonathan Brandis) who battle an evil that embodies any fear they may have. A clown who eats children (mainly), a werewolf, a leper, among other things. The children decide to fight back after they find their friends and in one case, family, dying at the hands of something supernatural. However, as we find out in the first five minutes was not successfully destroyed by the children and now IT's back (hehehe) and the children, now adults (John Ritter, Tim Reid, Harry Anderson, and Richard Thomas among others) have to make sure Pennywise finally meets his end. Like I said, this movie was my first scary movie (not counting Robocop). Ever since I've seen it, I've had some fear of clowns and Tim Curry is the sole reason for it. IT's (hehehe) not a great movie, but for being made for TV it does fairly well. They have a nice variety of well known stars (not as many as in The Stand, but close for a Stephen King movie) and it remains one of my favorite scary movies.

Video:  7/10

This is a mixed bag. The DVD is listed and shown in widescreen, but it was shot for television in a 1:1.33 ratio and I'm wondering if something is wrong with it. It looks good for being old and made for TV, certainly better than the VHS copy I have from TV or the purchasable EP VHS tape which sucks. I shouldn't complain.

Audio:  7/10

It's stereo... Decent mix, not much else I can say.

Extras:  5/10

It has a decent commentary by Dennis Christopher, Tim Reid, John Ritter, Richard Thomas, and Tommy Lee Wallace that was made just for the DVD (they reference DVDs and such) and is entertaining and insightful all at once. Very surprising to have, I'm glad it came with something. IT (hehehe) could have used a bit more, but at least it has something. IT's (hehehe) a long film, about three hours, and was shown in two parts. This makes it a flipper... This is sort of confusing because Warner Brothers doesn't label IT (hehehe) side A or B, rather Widescreen or Standard when in fact both are in widescreen and one is Side A and one B. Oh well.. Small complaint.

Overall:  8/10

Worth the ten to fifteen bucks for an entertaining, scary, horror movie with a good commentary.
