The Incubus
Movie: 1/10
I was looking forward to bringing you this DVD review (before I viewed it). The movie sounded interesting and the villian looked creepy as hell on the package. However, my English told me you can't always judge a book by it's cover and it goes the same for this DVD. (Granted, the front cover looks very B-Movie-esque, but there are good B-Movies (The Re-Animator)) but the villian on the back looked creepy as hell. Basically, the film stars John Cassavetes in the role of a local doctor who must help the police solve a case involving a series of murders comitted by a demon that rapes women. Meanwhile, his daughter is dating a boy who has nightmares that forecast the murders. Anyways, the plot sounds good and I bet even the book it was based on was fairly good. However, the film looks dated and is something that the people on Mystery Science Theatre would rip apart. If you dig B-Movies, I strongly suggest this one. It's funny (like Elite's A Night to Dismember), however, it definitely ain't scary.
Video: 4/10
I've seen movies from the 30's that looked better than this. Not that it deserves a decent transfer or anything..... It is widescreen/anamorphic. Note, the box does warn that "You may notice occasional film grain in certain scenes in this picture. This grain is inherent in the orginal film elements used." At least they don't lie and say digitally remastered.
Audio: 4/10
Again, there is nothing special here. I believe the film is in stereo, but I wasn't able to comfirm it.
Extras: 1/10
A trailer... Other than that: Nada.
Overall: 3/10
Elite is a mixed bag. I mean, some of their DVDs are extremely well done (The Re-Animator and Night of the Living Dead) but others like this one and A Night to Dismember are poorly produced and the movies are absolutely horrible. I really want to see their treatments of the Evil Dead flicks. (One reason is I've never seen the second and third.) I also have a tip for them. I've noticed at stores they are selling packs of 10 dvds, B-Movies and such. They should do a set like that, put Re-Animator and Night to Dismember togerhter for like 25 bucks. Or do an even larger set or something. There's an idea.
