Dear Readers,
A million apolgies to you all (and to the rest of the staff, John mainly) for the lack of DVD updates lately. Not to come up with excuses, but my schooling and lack of modivation following the terrorist attacks is to blame. Not that I haven't been watching/buying/reviewing DVDs, I have been, in fact MANY. The problem is not reviewing them and getting the time to watch them, but DVDs are almost a blessing and a curse now that they come LOADED with extras. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. Anyways, on to the first DVD review since "Memento", one of my favorite films, "Get Shorty".
GET SHORTY
Movie: 10/10
This is one of my favorite films of all time. I am a HUGE Elmore Leonard fan and I couldn't find a book that translates this well into a movie if I'd try. The acting and direction is top notch (I love the black comedy satire of the Hollywood film industry), the dialogue is razor sharp (like Leonard is known for) and it comes across like a successful caper with a bite when it needs to (the suspense towards the end). For those of you who haven't seen the film yet, it follows Chili Palmer (John Travolta), a loan shark from Miami, who travels to Hollywood to collect a loan when he comes in contact with a "B" movie producer, Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman) and his star (Rene Russo). Now, Chili, a huge movie fan, decides to come up with his own idea, which parallels his situation entirely and the team decides to attract blockbuster film star, Martin Weir (Danny DeVito). Meanwhile, we find Zimm needs Chili's help to get a set of gangsters off his back, who launder money through his shitty movies. Confused? The film provides a much better picture than my half-ass summary. Let me just tell you it's a great flick and has a LOT of twists that make the movie a definitive caper. Great shit. Sonnfeld's style is also terrific. I have NOTHING to complain about. Gotta love the "Touch of Evil" references. That, too, is a 10.
Video: 8/10
I have no complaints. It comes both widescreen and fullscreen. The transfer is terrific for being such an old DVD release (1998) and it's the shit. It is a two sided disc though, this gets annoying.
Audio: 8/10
Again, nice trasfer for being so old. Gets a little loud at times though. 5.1 is a good thing though.
Extras: 2/10
Nothing but a trailer and an info book. Both not bad, but this could of been done a LOT better.
Overall: 9/10
It's a ten dollar DVD. Buy it for the movie.
