Finding Forrester (2000)
Movie: 9/10
It was only a mild box office success but Finding Forrester was one of the best made films in an otherwise mediocre year. Most notably it marked the return of Sean Connery from the depths of movie hell he had been residing in lately. Not long ago we suffered with him through the dreadful Entrapment but now he has come back to us with a wonderful performance as the eccentric and reclusive author William Forrester.
He is matched move for move by the startlingly good Rob Brown who makes his motion picture and acting debut. Brown has an easy confidence and grace that makes him immediately believable as a brilliant young author. The two meet under unusual circumstances and form an uneasy but highly rewarding friendship that brings the best out of both of them.
Director Gus Van Sant does a fine job shooting this duo and gets excellent support from Oscar winners Anna Paquin and F. Murray Abraham as well as rapper Busta Rhymes.
Disc: 7/10
The disc doesn't quite match up to the quality of the film. It looks and sounds just fine but the extras are just a bit on the thin side. Included is an HBO making of documentary as well as a second documentary focusing on Rob Brown's almost instant switch from an unknown with no acting experience to starring opposite a big star like Connery. This is easily the most fascinating extra on the disc.
Also featured is a pair of deleted choir scenes. These are well shot and sound very good but I can understand why they were cut from the movie. They simply don't seem to have any practical connection to the story. The disc also includes the movie's trailer as well as trailers for Fly Away Home, To Die For, and First Knight.
By all means grab this disc for the movie but don't expect to spend much time absorbing the extras.
