Fight Club

Movie:  10/10

This film is a savage scream against the commercialization of our society. Mostly a bust at the box office, the film has slowly found its audience on video. The density and quality of this disc is no small part of that.

We follow the narrator around, a man whose name we never learn. He has built his life exactly as society says he should but he's miserable. He can't sleep and seems aimless. Eventually he crosses paths with the enigmatic Tyler Durden, a supposed soap maker. Tyler is full of surprises and the two end up sharing his dilapidated house when the narrator's apartment explodes. The two take a sudden departure from the commercial life, doing without pretty much all the luxuries of life. They realize they don't need it. Then they realize how alive fighting makes them feel. From there the titular Fight Club forms and you have a real movement developing.

The film is full of surprises but more importantly, it's the sort of film that forces you to take a stand. It's ideas are brash and in your face and it is near impossible to remain ambivalent towards them. Some critics loved it and some condemned it. Love it or hate it, the film undeniably touched a nerve. I suspect that history will eventually label it a classic, an important film worth studying.

Video:  10/10

This is just gorgeous. Blacks are pitch black and colors are dead on. The picture is ultra sharp and clear. It doesn't get much better than this.

Audio:  10/10

Clear as a bell. 5.1 Dolby Digital sound, with THX certification.

Extras:  10/10

What sort of extras do you want? Ask away because they are almost certainly included here. This double disc set features not one but four separate commentary tracks. There is one with just director David Fincher. There is one with Fincher and stars Norton, Pitt and Bonham Carter. Then there is one with Chuck Palahniuk, the author of the novel Fight Club and screenwriter Jim Uhls. Finally there is one with production designer Alex McDowell, digital animator Doc Bailey, visual effects supervisor Kevin Haug, director of photography Jeff Cronenweth and costume designer Michael Kaplan.

Then there are the behind the scenes sections. These aren't the standard fluff piece documentaries shot by the promotional department of the studio. Instead we have lengthy segments that look at various parts of the movie. These feature multiple angles and multiple commentaries for each, along with storyboards for the appropriate sections. These cover filmings of certain scenes and some of the special effects sequences.

Also included are deleted scenes, a trio of trailers, no less than seventeen TV spots, the hilarious two PSAs that never got used in theaters, the five internet spots, a music video, stills, the press kit, an interview with Norton, preproduction paintings, storyboards, etc. In other words, this thing is packed to the gills with goodness.

Overall:  10/10

Quite possibly the best DVD release ever. 'Nuff said.
