EYES WIDE SHUT

Movie:  10/10

Kubrick is one of my favorite filmmakers. It was such a wonderful feeling to see Spielberg carry his A.I. to the theatres in 2001 (the year of Kubrick's masterpiece) and it quickly rose on to my top ten list of 2001. However, it was not pure Kubrick. Kubrick had since passed away with his last masterpiece, Eyes Wide Shut. The film deals with a husband (Tom Cruise) and his wife (Nicole Kidman). One night, after a party and some pot, Kidman's character confesses that she once had thoughts of cheating on her spouse. This sends Cruise into a sexual venture of surrealism in which every woman seems to desire him and how Cruise deals with each situation. It's pure Kubrick. His taste in the erotic and darkness within is evident in Dr. Bill's internal struggles about his wife's confession. It's also evident that Kubrick's style has greatly been influenced by the French in this film. Not only because the story is based off of a French story, but the use of surrealism echoes that of French films and Fellini's works. It's a great film. I love Kubrick's use of tracking shots, colors, and the Christmas lights give it this surreal feeling that I adore. It's also Kubrick's dealing with controversial subjects and the human feelings that make it interesting. Slow for some and explicit for others. For me, the film is perfect. GUYS: It has a naked Nicole Kidman! You gotta love it!

Video:  8/10

Damn near perfect, full screen though. The colors are vivid and the Christmas lights turn out wonderfully. Beautiful.

Audio:  8/10

5.1, well done, has it when it needs it. Nicely done.

Extras:  6/10

Interviews with Cruise, Kidman, and Spielberg. Nicely done, but too sparce. How about a commentary? A documentary on Kubrick? It's also the digitally altered version of the movie. Give the consumers a choice! Warner Brothers bent us over on the re-release Kubrick set and they did it again with this DVD issue. What a rape...

Overall:  8/10

Great transfers, excellent movie, average extras.

COMING SOON: Campbell Scott's Hamlet, Me & Isacc Newton, and Children of Paradise: Criterion Collection.
