Erin Brockovich

Movie:   9/10

Who doesn't know the story of the beautiful Erin Brockovich? Once the film came out and the Oscar hype came, it was hard not to notice Soderbergh, Roberts, and Brockovich plastered all over television screens. Anyway, here is a short summary for those who don't know. Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts) is a spunky, young, beautiful, mother who is having a hard time making ends meet. After losing a law suit, she applies for a job in her lawyer's office (Albert Finney) and discovers a huge law case against a powerful corporation. A power company is not treating its waste properly and it's giving the citizens of a small town cancer. Erin persuades Ed Masry, her lawyer, to take the case with her help and the rest is history. That is my one large complaint about this film, nothing really came as a surprise. We all heard the Brockovich story and knew how it ended. It wasn't the films fault, it was the media's, just like with so many other true stories. (I shudder at the fact Ali and A Beautiful Mind are coming.) However, Soderbergh gives us great direction, a sharp script, and a lot of great performances. Roberts was my pick for best actress last year, and this film clearly shows that she was the best. Finney also gives a great performance as her lawyer and friend. It's a great film, it must have been to get so many Oscar nods and wins.

Video:   8/10

Again, solid anamorphic widescreen. Nothing to bitch about.

Audio:   7/10

It is 5.1, but for some reason it didn't blow my socks off. Was it perhaps the score? The lack of action? I don't really know, but it didn't grab me.

Extras:   7/10

It dropped the ball! AHHHH! It has two really well done documentaries with Soderbergh, Roberts, Brockovich and some of the other real life peeps. (Not bad.) A really nice assortment of deleted scenes with director's commentary (Soderbergh is even in some of them, and the scenes are actually good!) along with some other goodies. However, there is no commentary! Not by Roberts... Not by Soderbergh... Not by Brockovich... Nothing. Come on! Give us a commentary! At least the stuff that's here is solid.

Overall:   8/10

A good flick: acting, direction, script. It will be considered a fine film all around. It's not a bad buy.
