Elizabeth
Movie: 8/10
The most noticeable thing about this movie is the way it catapulted Cate Blanchett from unknown actress towards the top of the list of talented actresses working today. She is simply magnificent in this movie. Completely convincing at every moment she takes an iconic historical figure and lets us watch her grow from young woman to imperious ruler. You can see this growth easily in Blanchett's movements, voice and temperment. In the hands of a less capable actress, this would have been a beautiful film with no heart and soul.
While not very historically accurate, the film gives us an interesting glimpse into what might have been in the early years of the Elizabethan age of England when it rose to become a major power in Europe. Excellent performances are also turned in by Geoffrey Rush and Richard Attenborough.
Video: 8/10
Anamorphic widescreen. Looks good to me.
Audio: 8/10
Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. Nice and clear but nothing to truly make your speakers jump.
Extras: 5/10
This disc is a little skimpy. It contains a making of documentary, a featurette, two trailers and a photo gallery. The documentary contains some nice insights by all involved on the film.
Overall: 7/10
It'a good looking film with some great acting. Definitely worth a look, particularly if you enjoy historical drams. It could stand a bit more extra content on the disc though.
