The Contender

Movie:  8/10

Political thrillers are a rarety these days but writer/director Rod Lurie is doing his best to bring them back. His first film, Deterrence is a well done piece and The Contender is yet another step forward for him. The film's concept is that the US Vice President has died and a replacement is needed. The President (Jeff Bridges) selects a female senator Laine Hanson (Joan Allen) for the position. The remainder of the film follows the fierce opposition her confirmation encounters in Congress. Allegations of sexual improprieties in Hanson's past are brought forth which she refuses to discuss.

The worst that can be said about the film is that it is a tad unrealistic and preachy. But these are minor complaints in a story that is very well written, shot and acted. Allen, Bridges and Gary Oldman all turn in stellar performances and they are backed up by an excellent supporting cast. The film is both entertaining and thought provoking as it takes a look behind the scenes of politics in Washington.

Video:  9/10

This a very nice looking transfer. Black's are black and the colors are very strong. The film itself is shot very well and its look belies its $10 million budget.

Audio:  9/10

No complaints here, it sounds fine. It includes a DTS soundtrack along with a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack.

Extras:  8/10

A nice collection of goodies go along with this movie. There is a commentary track with writer/director Rod Lurie and Joan Allen. There is also a very nice making of documentary that makes a point of looking at the political thriller genre to give this one some perspective. A very large selection of deleted scenes is included, which can be viewed with a director's commentary. Lurie, a former movie critic, gives great commentary that really informs the viewer about how the movie was made. Highly recommended for film students or anyone curious about how film's are made.

Overall:  8/10

This is both an excellent film and disc. There are plenty of features to keep us happy and better yet, they're all high quality. The film itself stands up well under repeated viewings so it makes a fine addition to your personal library.
