I'm a big Kevin Smith fan. I've enjoyed his movies since my freshman year of high school and enjoy them to this day, two weeks before my senior year. His humor, while well-covered by the "dick and fart" joke also ventures into the relms of pop culture and satire. I admit, "dick and fart" jokes can be funny, but, in this age almost every comedy that comes out is plagued with these jokes and Smith's work always seems refreshing and funnier with each viewing.
In honor of the release of his fifth and final "Askewniverse" film entitled Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (Smith is a big fan of the Star Wars franchise and often includes jokes from the films.), I've decided to go back and review the previous four films: Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma, along with the short lived animated series for the movie Clerks. All of these reviews will be on the DVDs of the films (Sadly, not the Special Edition of Dogma is not in my collection yet so you will have to deal with the first edition.) because DVD is the way these movies (as well as all movies) should be seen.
Today, for my first review, I will be covering the Clerks DVD along with the Clerks: Uncensored DVD (aka the animated series). Enjoy! Snoochie Noochies!
CLERKS: UNCENSORED
Story: 7/10
Like the film, this deals with the two clerks dealing with consumers, an evil villian, their problems, Jay and Silent Bob, and a lot of other stuff. It only lasted two episodes on ABC after it was cancelled, which Smith went off about on his website as well as in other mediums. This show was not horrible at all, it wasn't The Simpsons, but it was quite good. (At least some of them were.) This brings me to my complaint: I love some of the episodes but I hate some of the episodes. My favorite has to be the first episode aired which deals with Jay suing the Quick Stop. This one is hilarious. I also enjoyed the Outbreak spoof and the Bad News Bears/Last Starfighter/Indiana Jones one with Dante coaching a little league team. Three out of the six are good, three out of the six disappointed me. I didn't so much dislike the first two (dealing with Leonardo Leonardo), I just disliked the Leonard Leonardo character. Maybe it's because I hate Alec Baldwin. Also, the sixth episode dealing with the fair across the street is a mixed bag. I can't decide if I love or hate it. The Matrix spoof is great but the rest of the episode is off the wall and seems out of place. This is not the movie and it's not The Simpsons. I only wished HBO would of picked up the rights (maybe Comedy Central otherwise), the humor seems held back at ABC's expense. DAMN YOU DISNEY! Also, it seems as if every episode has a series of homosexual jokes. This gets old after awhile. "Who's driving? Ohh no! Bear is driving! How can that be?" I love the Axel Foley spoof... Ohh yeah, the introductions to each episode are great...
Video: 8/10
This show was very sharp looking. I enjoyed the overall look greatly and the animation is top notch. My one and only complaint is that it's not widescreen...
Audio: 7/10
Not terrible sounding, I just wish it would of been put in surround sound instead of stereo... At least it's better than the movie's audio track.
Extras: 10/10
There is nothing else they could of added to this. (A documentary of Smith going off on Disney would of been nice. However, he makes his views clear in other ways.) We have animatics, which are cool looking. Hilarious introductions to each episode that clearly make up for the lack of vulgarity in the show itself. A pair of featurettes which are well done and entertaining along with a Super Bowl TV spot which is standard. Then, finally, my two favorite features, the commentaries for each episode (These are absolutely hilarious, it un-covers a lot of the controversy. This is almost as good as the Mallrats one.) and the Film Festival Trailer. I love this trailer, it's great.
Overall: 9/10
It's fairly cheap. I got it for like twenty bucks and it's loaded. It's also a two disc set and with six episodes, it's hard not to purchase for twenty bucks.
