Boogie Nights: 2 Disc Set
Movie: 10/10
This is one of the classic films of recent years. It could have been some melodramatic, sugar coated look at the porno industry, however, newcomer (no pun intended) Paul Thomas Anderson (Hard Eight, Magnolia) decided to take a nice ensemble and create one a realistic account of the porno industry during the 70's and 80's. While Anderson's style seems to rip off some modern contemporaries (Scorsese most often), it is still fresh and original and really adds a great tone to the overall flick. His writing is solid along with his direction, there are few flaws in this picture. However, one I found was the absence of AIDS in the porno world. Anderson comments on the commentary about this and thought the film took place too early in the porno industry to deal with it. I can see that, however, I thought it would have been a nice touch. Enough giving complements and appraising this film, time for a short summary. The film deals with Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg), a high school kid whose major asset is discovered by Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds), a local porno producer. Horner takes Eddie and introduces him to his troupe of porno actors, actresses, and crew members and we have a beautiful ensemble of characters. Ranging from Amber Waves (Julianne Moore), Buck Swope (Don Cheadle), Rollergirl (Heather Graham), Chest Rockwell (John C. Reilly), we have a whole family unit or people involved in porno. The rest of the film is like watching a train wreck as people become addicted to drugs, commit suicide, and become bottom feeders. This is a gritty account of the porno industry which is masterfully crafted in acting, direction, and writing.

Very crystal clear. New transfer I believe from the old one. Looks great! Supervised by P.T. Anderson himself.
Audio: 9/10
Nice and clear also. It's a shame this flick didn't come with the two soundtrack discs, I love the music. The dialogue packs a punch as do other sequences.
Extras: 9/10
Fully loaded with two spectacular commentaries, loads of deleted scenes, a reel titled "The John C. Reilly Files", and other great extras. The commentaries are a blast and so are the deleted scenes (which also come with commentary). I was a little disappointed with the disc, however, it didn't have the original Dirk Diggler short film, the trailers, and some other little goodies. A documentary would have been nice too, but it's all good. Much better than the first DVD (which wasn't bad in the first place).
Overall: 9/10
Damn near perfect, great flick and transfers along with loaded extras. Call me Dirk Diggler.
