Black Magic M66
More and more screeners keep piling up, now we have a big dose of anime and music DVDs. (Speaking of music, rest in peace George...) Anywise, here we go with a review of the anime thriller, Black Magic M66.
Story: 7/10
Let me start off by saying the only experience I've had with anime to this point was that of Akira and the Pokemon television series. I like cartoons, science fiction, fantasy, but I never really watched a lot of anime. It didn't catch me for some reason. I guess I just needed to give it a chance. Black Magic M66 deals with a government experiment that goes awry when a helicopter crashes in a woodland, leaving its cargo of assassin droids ready to roll. As you may have guessed, these things are ruthless and damn near invincible. After nearly wiping out a whole squad of soldiers, one of the droids heads to assassinate its creator's granddaughter. Its opposition (besides the military who didn't do so hot) is a hot freelance video journalist by the name of Sybel who hopes this story will be her big one. Not too unique of a plot, I know. However, I did enjoy it. It's like an ultra-violent cartoon with nudity, blood, cursing, etc. I never knew anime was really like this. It's cartoons for older people and it's fun to watch. Again, it's hard for me to comment on anime. I'm not much of a judge. The only complaint is that the flick could have been a little longer, it clocked in at a brief fifty minutes. I would really like to see creator Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell now. Also, you gotta love the mad scientist figure, he reminded my friend and I of Doc from Back to the Future.
Video: 8/10
Clear, crisp, full screen anime. Nothing to bitch about, could it have been widescreen though? Plus, some of the animation was a little cheesy. (No offense.)
Audio: 7/10
We got English stereo, English 5.1, Japanese, etc. What ever you desire to watch your anime in (it has subtitles). The 5.1 gets a little loud and sometimes the dialogue is kind of hard to hear, but maybe that's just me. Then there is that music... :)
Extras: 2/10
Pretty barren except for some character bios and previews of other manga. Where's the commentary? Couldn't it have had something else?
Overall: 7/10
Again, I'm not the best judge of anime yet. Give it time. Not a bad flick though. Entertaining.
